The best part was taking them all through San Francisco to meet and study with their primary resource teachers while we went to Sacramento to compete. BIBLIOGRAPHY PRIMARY RESOURCES: INTERVIEWS: Christian, Winston. Telephone Interview. 11 February 1994. Mr. Christian helped us to enrich our knowledge of Jamaica and Trinidad. He spoke with us about the Maroon people of the Jamaican mountains and discussed the practice of Judaism amongst a lot of the Jamaicans. He shared resources in his personal library with us and recommended books for further research. Cochran, Wendy Ellen. Personal Interview. Continuos Instruction. Mrs. Cochran is our daily dance teacher at Gompers Secondary School. Mrs. Cochran has taught dance for 22 years and has trained at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York. CAREN CALDER-PLUMMER
Traditional African Dance
Traditional African Dance Caren Calder-Plummer performs traditional African dances from South Africa and the West African region of Mali, Guinea, Senegal and the Ivory Coast. The rich tradition of African dance is explored through movement, rhythm and songs. The dances of West Africa include Goombey, a harvest dance, Lambaan, a dance of celebration, Sunu, a wedding dance and Manjani, Jon Don, and Wolosodon. The Can dance and the Boot dance are traditional dances from South Africa which illustrate a way of creating music from what is available. These dances were created by the workers in the mines who made music with their empty cans and danced in their work boots during break times. The Boot dance is linked to the stepping dance found in some of today's fraternities and sororities. Traditional African music and dance were interwoven into everyday life. This healing art form energizes the body, motivates the mind, and lifts the spirit.

Cercle d'Expression Artistique Nyata Nyata (The Nyata Nyata Circle of Artistic Expression) is an enterprise of contemporary artistic expression, which defines its activities in the field of African dance, with the specific objective to explore and develop the particular aesthetics of this art form as it relates to music, poetry, mythology, ritual and the related arts, bringing forth essential aspects which link the ancestral with the contemporary. This process includes choreographic creation, dance performance, musical composition, writings, conferences, the teaching and promotion thereof in a local, national and international context. Founded in 1993 as a non-profit, registered charitable organization in Canada, the Cercle d'Expression Artistique Nyata Nyata fulfills its mandate through the regroupment of three principle sectors of activity: Compagnie Danse Nyata Nyata (creation, production and performance of artistic works); Studio Danse Nyata Nyata (place of artistic, pedagogic and administrative activities); and Rhythms and Movement (method of teaching and trade name of courses).

If you come to West Africa you're bound to meet griots. We have been around for centuries as musicians, historians and mediators and still play an important role in the daily life.
It is our duty to tell people about the past, to keep our history alive. To advise people. And to safeguard our traditional culture. Therefore we are happy if you show an interest in our way of life and we'll gladly teach you all we know.

And we also teach Westafrican dance. If you're a professional musician we recommend that you rent a room at our school. That way we can give you our almost constant attention and you'll learn extremely fast. But if you prefer to stay at a hotel and only take a lesson every other day that's also okay with us.

Join him as he takes you on a wonderful fitness journey that bridges the gap between exercise and dance and brings mind, body and spirit together to the rhythmic beat of West African drums.

While he teaches you how to how to breathe and move your body, he'll teach you how to listen to a drumbeat and connect it to the inner rhythm you were born with. Over the past 18 years, Djoniba has taught thousands of eager students from many cultures and all walks of life to let the drums free their minds while they joyfully stretch, tone and build their bodies. Now it's your turn. Follow the spirit: It's Joneeba time!

Archives of Early Lindy Hop HISTORY OF SWING DANCING: AFRICAN INFLUENCES
Introduction: During the days of slavery in the United States, the African slaves entertained themselves, and others, with musical and dance forms that contained elements they brought with them from Africa. Some of the dances the slaves created went on to become national dance crazes for all Americans, such as the Cakewalk, and later the Black Bottom and the Charleston. When the Lindy Hop emerged in Harlem in the late 1920's it contained many of these African characteristics. However, it was danced in a rigid, upright manner (as you can see on the Shorty George Snowden filmclip, After Seben ). In the mid-thirties, Frank Manning introduced the angular posture that soon swept the Savoy Ballroom. Manning had no idea that he was bringing the dance closer to its African roots he says, "I thought it looked better that way, that's all." What follows are a list of characteristics of African dance that are found in African-American dance forms. Many of these characteristics are still very much a part of swing dancing. Some of these characteristics are seen primarily in Savoy style Lindy Hop, and less in some of the other swing forms.
