'Strictly African Dancing' will be a festival of African dance, a vibrant one off live Saturday night entertainment show to tie in with the BBC’s ‘Africa Lives’ season. Six celebrities of African descent have travelled back to their roots in order to learn a tribal dance to perform live. We will see their story, the story of the tribe, the story of the dance and the story of their training. No doubt there will be tears and tantrums along the way as they attempt to master a unique and somewhat unfamiliar discipline. Then of course there's the dancing, each of the celebrities will dance live in an attempt to impress the panel of judges, and to secure your vote. It will be a poignant, glamorous and entertaining evening.

Learn the basics of West African dance technique as well as its cultural and social significance. Three Saturday-Sunday sessions are available from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Aug. 6 and 7, Aug. 13 and 14, and Aug. 20 and 21 at the Newport Recreation Center, 225 NE SE Avery, Newport.
Using live drumming, provided by master drummer Mamadou Lamine Thioub from Sénégal, participants will practice characteristic movements used in African dancing. The class will learn to appreciate the relationship between music and dance in the various cultures and countries involved, as well as the similarities and differences between these dance traditions. In West African practice, for example, a great deal of communication (as opposed to individual expression) is expressed through group dancing. Instructor Gabrielle Eggstein has studied jazz, modern, classical Indian and African dance in Europe and Africa for many years. She has studied under master African teachers from Sénégal and Burkina Faso.
