African History
Sourcebook Africa is both the most clearly defined of continents - in its geography - and the hardest to pin down in historical terms. Human beings originated in Africa and, as a result, there is more diversity of human types and societies than anywhere else. It is not possible, in any non-ideological way, to claim any one of these peoples or societies as more essentially "African" than others; nor is it possible to exclude a given society as "not really African". On this site historical sources on the history of human societies in the continent of Africa are presented, when available, without making prejudgements about what is "African". This page is a subset of texts derived from the three major online Sourcebooks listed below. For more contextual information, for instance about the Islamic world, check out these web sites. Notes: In addition to direct links to documents, links are made to a number of other web resources.

Government intervention Coping with the depression The Paradox ... Related Sites
Many books and reports have been written about The Great Depression yet there is very little known about African-American life during the depression. Our intent is to gather information on the historical, economic, and social impact of the Great Depression on the African-American community. Some background information
The Great Depression started with the Wall Street stock market crash of 1929 and began the worst economic crisis in the history of the United States. It had devastating effects on all sectors of the economy for over a decade. Hundreds of thousands of people lost their jobs, businesses failed and financial institutions collapsed. Wages for workers who were lucky enough to have jobs fell drastically. The unemployed stood in long lines at soup kitchens waiting for something to eat and many went hungry. The duration of the depression was too long for any community to endure such hardship. Listed below are some of the topics we have briefly addressed and will be expanded as more information becomes available.
Government intervention
These are steps taken by the federal government to reduce unemployment and were also beneficial to African-Americans.

TENURE TRACK FACULTY POSITION: African Languages and Literature
Mission Statement
The mission of the Department of African Languages and Literature is to provide research and teaching in the areas of African languages, linguistics, literature, and oral traditions. This includes work on both graduate and undergraduate levels, and emphasizes the development and application of analytical and methodological tools that will enable students to work effectively and imaginatively in the four areas. The four areas are not considered mutually exclusive: the interconnections of these disciplines are studied closely and creatively. It is in the linkages among the disciplines that the Department makes its most significant and original contributions to knowledge. The Department's mission is also to produce graduate students who are capable of conducting original research and of providing teaching of quality in African languages, linguistics, oral traditions, and literature; students who will assure the future strength and health of these fields, who will carry our work to other institutions and countries. Through our teaching and our publications, we regularly inform and define, develop and give richness to our several disciplines, and so have a shaping influence on the field generally.
