Museum for African Art
593 Broadway
New York, NY 10012
Formerly known as the Center for African Art, the Museum is one of only two museums of its kind in the country, devoted exclusively to historical and contemporary African art. Visitors can now explore the richness of this old and rising culture. The Museum creates several top notch exhibitions per year, each exploring aspects of Africa's artistic traditions and cultural heritage. A past exhibition entitled, SECRECY: African Art that Conceals and Reveals , explored the relationships between art, secrecy, and power, showing how certain works of art serve to protect and maintain secret knowledge. Elaborate works of art often announce the presence of a secret, while paradoxically maintaining the contents of the secret. The exhibition included many beautiful and intriguing works of art, such as masks, figures, textiles, and architectural sculptures, each emphasizing different aspects of the theme. Other recent exhibits have been, Home and The World: Architectural Sculpture by Two Contemporary African Artists and Face of the Gods: Art and Altars of the Black Atlantic World Anyone interested in the great emerging nation of Africa will thoroughly enjoy a visit to the Museum. While exhibitions change, each offers a degree of quality and communication that makes this museum an outstanding cultural resource.

Folktale through African Art
by
Eileen M. DeMaio
Contents of Curriculum Unit 93.02.04:
To Guide Entry
In this unit I will bring together the study of African folktale and African art. As an art teacher, I look for opportunities to expose my students to original artwork. As part of this unit, students will visit the Yale Art Gallery’s African collection, but they will first study folktales and other stories from West Africa. By hearing and reading these stories they will be introduced to many new cultural and religious beliefs, such as spirits inhabiting nature and posessing special powers. Once the students become familiar with these, they will go to the gallery with some knowledge and background of the culture that created the works of art. They may even be able to find some of the characters from the stories depicted in the sculpture. The type of sculpture we will be concentrating on are masks and statuettes. The masks were wom as part of elaborate costumes and used in ceremonies, rituals, and dances to dramatize the myths and tales of a certain tribes’ history or cultural beliefs. Africa is a very large continent, about four times the size of the United States. It contains over 21 countries and an estimated 2,000 different cultural or linguistic groups. Although many of the peoples of Africa still live as their ancestors did, in tribal communities pursuing agricultural and pastoral ways of life, there are many that have been influenced by industrialization and now live in large cities and modern communities like our own. Since most cultures did not have a written language they are largely without written histories. Instead these peoples have kept their cultural traditions and beliefs alive for thousands of years in their myths, legends, folktales, rituals, prayers, proverbs, and songs.

African Art and the Web Museum
An Undergraduate Course, University of Virginia
Spring Semester 1998
Benjamin Caleb Ray Course Description: Each student will design an exhibition of African art for presentation on the World Wide Web, incorporating the results of the student's study of African art. The exhibitions will contain an introductory explanation of the exhibit's theme, a map of Africa locating the societies whose art objects are represented, images of selected African art objects, relevant field-context images, descriptive labels, and other explanatory textual materials. The images students will use are taken from collections at the Bayly Museum of the University of Virginia , the Fowler Museum of Cultural History , the Hampton University Museum Monday and Wednesday classes will be devoted to illustrated lectures on African art; Friday computer lab sessions will be used for computer instruction, digital image processing, and Web page construction. The course includes the following curricular components: a brief history of African art studies; African ritual and cosmology; analysis of African art exhibition catalogues; library research on selected art objects; the exhibition of African art in museum contexts; training in Web skills and image processing. The special challenge of the course is to create exhibitions of African art that attempt to be true to the objects themselves while placing images of them in a cultural environment of educational value to the exhibitor and the viewer alike.

African Art: Traditional
page: Many forms of ambiguous sexuality can be found throughout the traditional arts of Africa, including images of androgyny hermaphroditism , and transvestism; and much of erotic sculpture and theater can also be seen as homoerotic Traditional African art is distinguished here from contemporary African art, but it should be noted that tradition and the contemporary are not mutually exclusive in Africa. If "tradition," is recognized to mean "handed down," then most of what is known as the traditional African arts almost always blends the traditional with the transitional, or the "handed across," to varying degrees. The same can be said of homosexual traditions. Sponsor Message.
African arts are a holistic form traditionally, consisting of the integration of sculpture, costuming, sound, movement, oral narrative, and theater, which sometimes are indistinguishable. This concept of holism applies not only to the arts, but pervades all of traditional African thinking about the nature of things and of human behavior. Holism does not divide, as in Western compartmentalization and categorization. Polarities Polarities, in Africa, such as "homosexual" and "heterosexual," may function as complementary oppositions generally do, expressing the extremes of human behavior, as the passive and the aggressive, the benevolent and the malevolent, the feminine and the masculine, or the spiritual and the physical.

I believe collecting authentic, antique African and tribal art should not soley be for those with "deep pockets." Good interesting objects abound in the "medium end" range. As I have low overhead and chose wisely and bargain hard, I am able to sell to collectors at reasonable "wholesale" prices. While I specialize in Fon and Ewe vodun, power and twin figures, my selection also includes a wide variety of wooden, iron and textile art objects from the Adangbe, Ashanti, Baule, Eket, Fanti, Ibibio, Ibo, Lobi, Moba, Mossi, Nok, Tchamba, Yoruba and other West African ethnic groups. Additionally, I sell occasional objects from other regions of the world as well as Africana and utilitarian pieces such as clothing, stools and chairs, hair dresser plaques, old paper currency and spoons.
Unlike some dealers of African art, I have lived in West Africa for over ten years. I make annual buying trips and have extensive supplier networks in the subregion. Please email me for additional photos of objects on display and on hand. I can also search for objects you seek.
