South African arts and crafts gallery
Welcome to Maitele At Maitele arts and craft, we have fine paintings, sculptures and bead work that depict the way and the cultures of the people of Southern Africa - especially the Vhavenda people. We intend to bring the arts and craft of the Vhavenda people to the world, to introduce you to their culture and to give them a voice.
We also intend to give a platform for African artists, especially those who do not have a stable market, an art gallery on the Internet where they can show their wares.
Maitele is a Venda word that means "the way we do things" - The craft artists featured here concentrate more on how the Venda people do things, their culture as well as the traditional rituals.
History of The Venda People
A day in the life of the Venda people.
South African Dreadlocks web site.

This is seen by the traditional dance and traditional figures in their paintings and sculptures. It is thus our intention to bring to you an array of art works, including African drums, wooden sculptures, paintings, bead works and crafts from the surrounding areas.
Most of the art of African people has always been practical - we see art depicted on the clothing patterns, on the houses, the cooking clay pots and in the bead work designs.

Events The Collection in Tenafly, New Jersey, site of the American Province Provincialate of the SMA Fathers, was primarily developed under the leadership of Fr. Patrick O'Donoghue and Fr. Kevin Scanlan Today, the SMA African Art Museum organizes three to five exhibitions a year in its 2000 square foot exhibition space. Most of these are from the collection of approximately 1000 pieces of traditional African art, but since 1996, the staff has mounted three major loan exhibitions: "The Artistry of Traditional African Sculpture", "Nigerian Art from the Judith and Leonard Kahan Collection" and "Keepers of the History: African Art from the Collection of Dr. Michael Berger ". Through the generosity of collector/donors in the metropolitan area, it acquires 50 to 200 significant works of African art each year. Forthcoming exhibitions include "Liberian Images: Past, Present and Future"; "Bamana Door Locks from the Collection of Dr. Pascal J. Imperato", both 1999, and "Yoruba Sculpture: Father Kevin Carroll, SMA, 2000". The museum serves thousands of school children annually through gallery talks and tours at the museum, and presentations in the schools. Lectures at libraries, service clubs, senior citizen organizations and other community sites are offered by Director, Robert J. Koenig. Fees vary with the extent of the presentation. HOME PROGRAMS AFRICA IN PHILADELPHIA CURRICULUM RESOURCES ... CHECKLIST October 2, 2004-January 2, 2005
Join an interactive celebration on African art and culture, as African storytellers, dance troupes, praise singers, and artists perform in honor of an innovative exhibition of more than 150 works of contemporary and traditional art from Africa. This exhibition surveys the artistic achievements of just a few of the many cultures of sub-Saharan Africa. Drawn primarily from the Seattle Art Museum's remarkable African collections, the objects on view are organized into culturally specific sections representing a dozen countries. Advisors from each of these cultures bring the works on display to life on the audio tour, revealing the meanings, stories, and ideas associated with them. Video projections demonstrate how these objects, revered for their artistic mastery by Western audiences, are put to use in the ceremonies of the African communities for whom they were created. Two sections of the exhibition explore the convergence of artistic practices from throughout Africa. “African Art in Motion” shows how fundamental ideas are expressed in the stance—standing, sitting, balancing, kneeling, and riding—of figurative sculptures from Mali to Angola. “Contemporary African Art” brings together photographs, sculpture, and other works by modern artists who, whether they live in Africa or around the globe, are inventing new forms of artistic production and extending the scope and meaning of African art.

African art collection sold in major Paris auction
PARIS, France Hundreds of art lovers flocked to Paris over the weekend to snap up over 600 items of rare African art at near-record prices in a two-day auction billed by organizers as a historic sale. A rare Mbete statue which fetched 14 million francs ($1.8 million) the highest price ever paid at an auction for an art object from Gabon was among the highlights of the sale, organizers said on Monday. The total proceedings of 88.5 millions francs ($ 11.3 million) twice exceeded the low-end estimation of 40 million francs ($ 5.1 million) for the 644 objects. "I think this is the triumph of the choices of Hubert Goldet, who has been able to gather all these objects," auctionneer Francois de Ricqles said on Monday. The two-day auction featured mostly objects from Western Africa and was billed as the most important sale of African art since the New York auction of the Helena Rubenstein collection in 1966, according to Ricqles. "This collection is very important because it has exceptional objects, and a great number of objects, and astonishing sets, and has belongued to prestigious collectors and many pieces were exhibited around the world," said Nathalie Antolini, a spokeswoman for Ricqles.
