"In the 19th and 20th centuries, African art was 'discovered' by Western colonizers and embraced by modernist artists for its lack of pretension and exciting formal qualities. With the Westernization of much African society, 'traditional' art has become commercialized and sold as souvenirs, while from the 1920s, the growth of African art colleges in more modernized sections of Africa has led a number of African artists to adopt western influences in their work."

African Tribal Art is considered amongst the finest creations in the art world. Today authentic pieces are highly sought after by collectors. Many of the collections along with some replica's, can be viewed in museums and galleries all over the world. In Africa art is considered an integral part of everyday life, as a cross-cultural dialogue, personal therapy, and communication with the Gods and ancestors. African art have a great cultural and traditional significance, latest developments and understanding of aesthetic principles, religious and ceremonial values, have brought about a greater insight into the ideas and moral values that African artists express in their work. Over the years Africa developed into a continent with a fascinating mix of the modern world blended with an exhilarating age-old African twist. Each country has many exciting cultures that was prepared and brewed for more than more than 1000 years. The last few decades have seen a huge decline in tribal ceremonies and rituals hence authentic African Art is extremely difficult to find.

A frican art - Ceremonial sculpture masks , and crafts produced by African tribal cultures , as well as by the African cultures of colonial and post-colonial periods. Generally African art means sub-Saharan art, with the cultures of Africa's northern parts typically referred to as Egyptian and North African. Making generalizations about the visual culture of any group of people is a crude endeavor, especially with a culture as diverse as Africa's. With this thought in mind, know that this survey, as any must be, is tremendously limited in its breadth and depth.

In the 13th and 14th centuries, the great African empires of Mali, Ghana, and Songhai flourished in the Inland Niger Delta, an area formed by a huge bend in the Niger River. The fabled cities of Timbuktu and Djenne were the important trading centers of Mali.

European contacts with West African go back to the 16th century when the Portuguese established trading posts on the west coast of Africa. These early contacts resulted in a thriving trade in gold and ivory. African Art
    Traditional and Abstract Stone Carvings
African art sculpture portraying animals and people in both realistic and abstract form. The pieces are all one of a kind, carved using different types of stone such as serpentine, verdite, springstone, African butter jade and rapoko, an African term for soapstone used by indigenous carvers throughout the world. The term rapoko originated among the Shona artists of Zimbabwe, where it derived from the stone's common resemblance to the roasted millet consumed by a majority of that country's indigenous inhabitants. Most of the stones are found in a large spectrum of colors, varying from creamy white to black.
We have an abiding love for the southern part of Africa: its people, its customs, its wildlife that exists freely within its remaining beautiful open spaces. We are particularly fond of African art as represented by the beautiful stone carvings that we offer here for your examination and purchase. The sculptures shown in this catalog are representative of those we import from Africa regularly, shipping to you from our Woodland Hills, California location. We have a very large inventory in addition to those pieces illustrated. If there is something you would like to ask about, call us at (888) 237-4327.
