Welcome to the website for the African Diaspora Archaeology Network ("ADAN"). The ADAN provides this web portal as a focal point for archaeological studies of African diasporas, with news, current research, information and links to other web resources related to the archaeology and history of descendants of African peoples. Through this engagement with African diasporas, the ADAN seeks to connect an intellectual community that considers the historical processes of racialization, gender, power, and culture operating within and upon African descendant communities.

6/30/2005 2:48:44 PM (GMT +2)
The University of Botswana (UB) will host the 12th congress of the Pan African Archaeological Association next month. A news release from the university says the event will be hosted by the UB Archaeology Unit.

The decision to host the event was made by the Permanent Council of the Pan African Archaeological Association after its 11th Congress in Mali. The Association intends to bring to the event a substantial number of African scholars from Africa and beyond. The release explains that the Pan African Association for Archaeology and Related Studies (PAA) was founded in Nairobi, Kenya in 1947. Since then, the Association has held congresses in different African countries every four years. The main goal of the PAA is to promote archaeological research into the African past as well as the conservation and management of the African archaeological and other heritages, both tangible and intangible. It provides a forum for scholars based inside and outside Africa, but who are actively engaged in research in African archaeology and related disciplines to meet and share research ideas, results, experiences and and to debate pertinent issues.

E-mail: c r decors@maxwell.syr.edu I am an archaeologist with research interests in culture contact and change, material culture studies, and general anthropology. I have excavated at sites in the United States and the Caribbean, but my primary area of research has been in the archaeology, ethnohistory, and ethnography of sub-Saharan Africa. I am interested in how archaeology can help us understand the transformations that occurred in Africa during the period of the Atlantic trade. My field experience includes sites in the Gambia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Togo. However, my most recent archaeological research has focused on the African settlement at Elmina, Ghana, the site of the first and largest European trade post established in sub-Saharan Africa. My principal publications include the Record of the Past: An introduction to Physical Anthropology and Archaeology (Prentice Hall 2000)

Education Newsletter: Ethnography of Magnolia Plantation On-Line

The National Park Service Archeology and Ethnography Program’s website is the new home of the Magnolia Plantation Ethnography ( www.cr.nps.gov/aad/PUBS/studies/STUDY04A.htm ). The Magnolia Plantation is part of the Cane River Creole National Historical Park, at Natchitoches, Louisiana. The ethnography brings together the different, and sometimes uneasy, histories and recollections of the Magnolia Plantation’s French Creole owners, Creoles of color, and African American descendants. By combining this rich history with present-day urban and rural Natchitoches society and culture, this study recommends how the Cane River Creole National Historical Park can best use its cultural resources to accommodate all perspectives and educate the public about a painful, but highly human, aspect of our nation’s history. African American Resources Featured
African American Archaeology, History and Cultures is featured in a comprehensive web site, which contains links to hundreds of useful resources including magazine articles, bibliographies, web sites, museum exhibits and more. The site is divided into six sections: African American Archaeology; African American History and Cultures; Slavery, Resistance and Abolition; African Archaeology; and African History and Culture. It is a great resource for students, teachers, the general public, and scholars. Check the web site out at https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/cfennell/www/bookmark3.html

New South Associates is a cultural resource management firm specializing in the archaeology, history, architectural history, and preservation planning of the Southeast and Caribbean. Headquartered in the historic village of Stone Mountain, New South Associates maintains branch offices in South Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee, providing ready access to projects throughout the southern United States and the Caribbean. Incorporated in 1988, New South Associates is a founding member of the American Cultural Resources Association (ACRA) , the only national trade association devoted to the business of cultural resource management
This consultation process requires specialists trained in prehistoric and historic archaeology, history, architectural history, and related disciplines. The evaluation of cultural resources also requires knowledge of regional prehistory and history, as well as familiarity with the policies of the appropriate State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). In concert with the lead federal agency requiring cultural resource compliance, the SHPO reviews and either accepts or rejects all studies and recommendations made regarding cultural remains. Cultural resource studies are thus best handled by consulting firms who have the specialized staff, facilities, and experience needed to provide well reasoned recommendations and guidance in order to minimize project delays and costs.
