1.1 Mission and emphases of the department
The subject areas under African/African American Studies come under the umbrella of area studies. One of the strengths and the flaws of the area studies subject areas is that they are multi-disciplinary in scope and can be wide-ranging geographically. Consequently, the African/African American subject area does not support one particular department or school at the University. The departments that are supported by library materials in this area include and are not restricted to: African American studies, anthropology, fine arts, geography, international relations, literature, psychology, sociology, religion, etc. Although not supported by the Africa/African American subject area exclusively, the faculty and students of the African American Studies Department can serve as a good representative department of those that are supported by this fund. For that reason I will include information on this department here.

AFS Course Descriptions

St. Clair Drake Center for African American Studies
Courses offered in the program are designed to enable students enrolled in any of the five university colleges to pursue undergraduate sequences for enrichment or specialization in African American Studies. Most courses offered through the St. Clair Drake Center for African and African American Studies are interdisciplinary in nature and may be used to satisfy general education requirements as well as electives. Objectives The objectives of the African American Studies are: To provide a fundamental understanding of those economic, social, cultural, and political forces in Africa, Europe, and North and Latin America that have shaped the lives of African peoples within the African Diaspora, c. 1400 to the present. To provide a center for research and creation of materials that illustrate the problems and development of peoples of African descent in a variety of historical institutional settings—from slavery to freedom—in contemporary United States, South America, and the Caribbean. Presently, the focus is Chicago metropolitan history, including urban and suburban enclaves and the famed Black Metropolis.

Department of Africana and Diaspora Studies
About Us
The Department of African American Studies was founded in 1970 as the Center for Black Studies. As such it was the first such academic center in higher education in New Jersey and one of the earliest in the entire United States. Originally the Center was established as a semi-autonomous degree-granting unit of the University with the responsibility of offering two degrees, a B.A. in Black Culture and a B.S. in Black Community Studies. Subsequently in cooperation with the school of education, an M.A. in Education with a concentration in Black Studies was established. In 1980 the two undergraduate degrees were consolidated into a B.A. in African American Studies. The guiding philosophy of the Center for Black Studies as the first Director, Dr. George Jackson articulated it, remains that of the present African American Studies Department. Dr. Jackson pointed out that: Scholars are needed (to confront the problems created by racism) who are trained to see the whole problem, not pieces of it. Moreover, freedom must occur within the context of twentieth century science and technology, but from persons who are committed to humanistic application of scientific and sociological principles… the curriculum will integrate the humanities with all other subjects, [and] will be taught from the Black Perspective-which to be meaningful must be humanistic by definition.

Program of Study The Bachelor of Arts concentration in African and African-American Studies provides a context in which College students might examine African and African-American cultures and communities from a rigorous, interdisciplinary perspective. Its intellectual justification lies in the direction taken by African and African-American studies over the past few years, which has been characterized by a growing insistence on the integrity and coherence of the links (historical, sociocultural, and experiential) between Africa and its diasporas. Program Requirements The concentration requires a B.A. thesis and eleven courses distributed according to the following guidelines: 1. Six basic courses dealing with African and African-American materials. These must include the three-quarter African civilization sequence and a combination of three courses in African or African-American subjects approved by the Program Coordinating Committee. Since the African civilization sequence is used to fulfill a program requirement, students should take another civilization sequence to satisfy their Common Core requirement. The remaining three courses are to be selected from other offerings listed by the committee in any year.
