Program Description
Program Outcomes Graduates of African-American Studies at the College are expected to be able to read comprehensively, write lucidly and cogently, speak effectively, listen intently, research thoroughly, and reason logically. Upon completion of the major in African-American Studies, it is expected that graduates will enter graduate or professional school, or the world of work. AAAS Home Page AAAS Video Resources AAAS Newsletter African and African American Studies is an interdisciplinary program housed in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The program offers a flexible, challenging, and stimulating course of studies for students who wish to pursue a minor that will allow them to:
  • Explore the unique cultural heritages and experiences of Africans and African Americans beyond the confines of a traditional curriculum.
    Increase their skills in critical analysis, discourse, and writing, while honing these tools in a multi-cultural classroom environment.
    Gain a sense of perspective about the series of crucial issues confronting a multi-cultural society, including: cultural hegemony, social class antagonisms, gender inequities and the lingering legacy of pseudo-scientific racist preconceptions.

African American Studies
Although African American Studies does not offer an academic program leading to a graduate degree, it does offer several graduate courses that enable you to get a minor concentration in the Afro-World experience. The courses provide a broad interdisciplinary approach to the black experience and include the social sciences, communication, education, psychology, and the arts and humanities. Several courses contribute to degree programs in African and Latin American Studies. Graduate students pursuing degrees in communication, education, international studies, health sciences, sociology, history, political science, and philosophy will find a minor emphasis in the Afro-World experience to be useful.

501A Images of Blacks (4)
Examines the sources and the effects of the dominant negative images of blacks that have pervaded American culture bucks, coons, buffoons, improvident, children, devoted Christians, etc. with a view to showing how they relate to slavery and the subsequent exclusion of blacks from the mainstream of American life. Also examines alternative images. Materials for the course will be drawn from a variety of areas literature, sciences, pseudosciences, media, and visual arts.

Curriculum The department's interdisciplinary curriculum is built on three pillars:
  • The Humanities
  • The Social Sciences
  • Research and Service. From Fall 2002, students will have opportunities to conduct field research and provide service to the nation through the department's Research and Service Institute. The institute research focus is in four areas:
  • Rural America, particularly the Ohio River Valley

    IDS African American Studies
    Center for African Studies offers a minor in African studies that can be taken in conjunction with a department or interdisciplinary major leading to the bachelor's degree in the colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Agriculture, Education, Fine Arts, Journalism and Communications and the Business Administration. The minor in African studies is awarded via an interdisciplinary program (outside the major discipline) on the various dimensions of the African continent and its peoples. The minor is intended to provide a solid foundation for careers in teaching and research as well as in other professional work for which knowledge of Africa is essential.

    Vacant. African-American Studies, a comprehensive study of the African-American people's experience, combines the approaches of the humanities and the social sciences.     About the Department
    The Department of African American Studies has as its central mission disseminating and creating knowledge on Africa and the African Diaspora, and promoting interdisciplinarity through teaching and research. It provides programs of teaching and research in African, African American and Caribbean culture, especially these cultures' history, politics, sociology, and contemporary affairs. African American Studies has four sub-fields that shed light on the experiences of Africans throughout the Diaspora. They are:

    Within these fields students may also pursue such emphasis areas as public policy, health and the environment, media studies, museum studies, bioinformatics and technology, and gender and globalization.
