Our Master of Arts Program is designed to provide students with a thorough grounding in the literature and research of African-American Studies, and enable them to produce critical analysis and research about the complex and historically specific experiences of Africans in the Americas. However, students will also be expected to demonstrate how those experiences have contributed to, and been shaped by, political, cultural and economic forces both nationally and globally.
For social service and health professionals who deliver services to African-American populations, the degree of Master of Arts in African-American Studies will enhance their understanding of the complex social, cultural and historical experiences of these communities, which will lead to more effective delivery of service.
For teachers or education administrators at the secondary or community college level, the degree of Master of Arts in African-American Studies will enhance their understanding of race relations between all actors in the school environment. It will also enable them to develop curricula and courses that address specific ethnic/racial groups who have been integral to the American experience and have contributed significantly to American culture.
For professionals engaged in producing cultural representations (encompassing everything from museum curators to advertising executives), the degree of Master of Arts in African-American Studies will enhance their understanding of the shared and unique social indices, historical experiences and the patterns and processes of culture of the people of African descent.

and African Studies News/Events The African-American/African Studies major/minor is geared towards both the scholarly and the working world. We aim to produce graduates who are ready for advanced graduate study in the humanities or social sciences; we also aim to produce professionals who can work in a variety of fields that require an understanding of the history and cultures of Afri can and African-descended peoples. Our major can be used in a broad array of fields, such as marketing; journ alism; education; and the arts. In future we hope to establish internships for our majors, where they can apply their scholarly knowledge to a particular career. Flexibility is a key characteristic of our program. African-American/African Studies majors have a wide array of courses to choose from, and may also take courses in other departments as a way to fulfill electives in their major. Additionally, some of the courses in African-American/African Studies may be taken for credit towards a major or minor in another department. The Department of African-American/Studies is dedicated to giving our students the most expansive education possible, and for this reason we allow our students a range of course options, both from within and without the department. Several of our courses are also offered during the evening

Office Hours: 9-12, 1-3:30 Memo from Dean Maxson and the Report of the Advisory Committee on African American Studies Please read the Dean's memo and the Report of the Advisory Committee before proceeding further , since both announce significant developments affecting the AAWS major and graduate program. African American World Studies focuses on the study of people of the African diaspora, particularly in the United States. African American World Studies is interdisciplinary, drawing cooperating faculty from American studies, anthropology, art, education, English, French, geography, history, political science, Spanish and Portuguese, sociology, and women's studies. Because a thorough understanding of African American and African cultures cannot be achieved through study restricted to the perspective of a single discipline, all students are required to pursue courses in both humanities and social sciences. African American world studies continually expands its perspectives by developing or cross-listing courses that fuse the knowledge drawn from many disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.

BACHELORS OF ARTS DEGREE IN AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES
ABOUT THE DEGREE PROGRAM The new multidisciplinary degree in African American studies, with a Minor in African Studies, is the first program of its kind in the Delmarva region.  The course will give students the opportunity to acquire an objective view of Africa and the African Diaspora in the New World.  It would expose students to multiple disciplines and adequately prepare them to compete in the global job market that is brought on by the increasing globalization of business and trade. The program should benefit students from the humanities, social sciences, as well as those headed towards professional studies.  It will, also, prepare students for careers in the diplomatic service, Africa related services, state and local government and community-based agencies.
      EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES OF THE  PROGRAM
The main objective of the degree program is to provide students the chance to acquire an objective view of Africa and the African diaspora in the United States, in seeing them gain an understanding of their historical, economic, social and political problems, and how these important issues are depicted in African/African American literature.  The aim is to train and educate undergraduate students, and arm them with the necessary knowledge to continue to graduate school or enter the job market where a basic knowledge and understanding of African/African American problems are required.  The program will prepare students for graduate work in a number of disciplines: history, sociology, literature, ethnography, social work, political science, and African studies.
