African-American and post-colonial studies African-American studies concerns itself primarily with the examination of the customs and culture of its people, namely Black Americans of African descent, who were forcefully brought to America between the seventeenth and nineteenth century because of America's colonization of their homeland; the ‘dark' continent of Africa. Arguably the most significant investigation within post-colonialism at present, African-American studies tackles issues such as the effects of imperialism on identity and racial boundaries, ethnicity, marginality and the authenticity of literary and oral records of history. Now recognised as one of the most influential and authoritative socio-intellectual movements of recent times, African-American studies is a campaign with which all oppressed and subjugated people regardless of race or nationality can empathise. Initially, Black consciousness and culture was studied as a single facet of the broader field of post-colonial studies. Admittedly, the two areas of interest do share many similarities in that they both stand at the intersection of debates about race, colonialism, gender, politics, and language. But while Bill Ashcroft has stated that Black Studies is related to its predecessor only in complex and ambiguous ways, I would argue that this specific field of study has enjoyed a pervasive and quite distinct development apart from general studies in post-colonialism. Indeed, many critics adamantly position themselves within the field of African-American studies rather than in that of post-colonialism. This may reflect the common desire to reclaim the lost voice and heritage of numerous enslaved generations.

A GUIDE TO PRIMARY RESOURCES IN AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY
Primary vs. Secondary Resources
Primary resources are often defined as works providing first-hand evidence of historical events by merit of their having been produced by witnesses or participants in those historical events. This definition encompasses, for example, unpublished works such as oral histories, letters, journals, and photographs. A slightly broader definition of primary resources can also include published materials written during the period studied. Secondary resources, by contrast, are works such as textbooks, encyclopedias, and scholarly studies that attempt to interpret or analyze primary resources. What follows is a guide to primary resources in African-American history with a focus on those materials that are available at Kenyon and that fall within the time period covered by History 175.

Working for tips, the porters provided elegant personal service to overnight railroad passengers for 100 years after the Civil War. Rebuked by white organized labor, they miraculously formed the first black American trade union in 1925 under the leadership of A. Phillip Randolph. Persistence of the Spirit VHS, 32 min., 1986, Study guide available For the first time, the life and accomplishments, the struggle and hard labor of black Arkansans from territorial days to the present are documented with rare photographs, maps, illustrations, newspapers, and lively scholarly interpretation. The story is organized into five chronological time periods: Black Pioneers Before 1803, No Share in the Harvest: 1803-1860, First Freedom: 1860-1900, Tell 'Em We're Risin': 1900-1954, and We Speak for Ourselves: 1954-1986. I. Curricular Programs and Library Collection Needs Although the first academic program specifically addressing African-American culture did not appear until the 1969-70 academic year, Oberlin's unique position in American history and the development of higher education has resulted in an extraordinary richness of library collections supporting this department. Library collections house the pamphlets, newspapers, books, and magazines of the ante-bellum social and religious reform movements. Abolitionist activism led to the co-education of white and black students, as well as men and women. The Department of Special Collections and the College Archives house rich collections of the leading organizations and individuals active in the causes of the day. The African-American Studies program was originally founded to study and raise awareness of the contributions of Black culture to the American experience. The program initially offered a concentration in individual and community service. With broadened emphasis on the United States and Africa, African-American Studies achieved departmental status in the 1983-84 academic year, and offers a major, a minor, and an honors program which require a concentration in one of five core fields; history, politics
