While developing students' analytical and critical thinking skills through the exploration of the Atlantic World, African American and Diaspora Studies as a discipline contributes to broader debates about race, gender, culture, class, politics, sexuality, and color. As an intellectual endeavor, the Program in African American and Diaspora Studies also advances research and scholarship within the growing field of African diaspora studies via academic conferences, lecture series, fora, and faculty publications. Courses in African American and Diaspora Studies will allow you to better grapple with the ideas of plurality and diversity in our multicultural and multiethnic society; such ideas and ideals are integral to understanding today’s complex global realities. The contributions of people of African descent are considerable human achievements in the areas of literature, philosophy, science, music, politics, and visual culture. Concentrators in African American and Diaspora Studies go on to pursue Graduate Studies in a variety of fields as well as careers in government, journalism, business, law, K-12 and post-secondary education, engineering and public service.

Department of African-American
and African Studies News/Events The African-American/African Studies major/minor is geared towards both the scholarly and the working world. We aim to produce graduates who are ready for advanced graduate study in the humanities or social sciences; we also aim to produce professionals who can work in a variety of fields that require an understanding of the history and cultures of Afri can and African-descended peoples. Our major can be used in a broad array of fields, such as marketing; journ alism; education; and the arts. In future we hope to establish internships for our majors, where they can apply their scholarly knowledge to a particular career. Flexibility is a key characteristic of our program. African-American/African Studies majors have a wide array of courses to choose from, and may also take courses in other departments as a way to fulfill electives in their major. Additionally, some of the courses in African-American/African Studies may be taken for credit towards a major or minor in another department. The Department of African-American/Studies is dedicated to giving our students the most expansive education possible, and for this reason we allow our students a range of course options, both from within and without the department. Several of our courses are also offered during the evening

Welcome to the Department of African and African-American Studies!
Our department will introduce you to African and African-American history, culture and life in general. Although Africa and Afro-America are the major areas of study, due attention is paid to the Caribbean and Latin America. The interdisciplinary major, with its opportunity for fieldwork in Africa or in the African Diaspora, also encourages students to engage in independent study to maximize their academic and research potential. In addition to academic interests, our program will prove useful for professionals whose careers take them to these geographic and cultural areas. Although we do not currently offer advanced degrees (an M A degree has been approved by the College), courses are available to persons working toward an interdisciplinary M.A., Ph.D or other advanced degrees from varied programs. Quincy Jones reflects on his role in pop history
By Allison Rupp Published: Friday, February 20, 2004 Media Credit: allison rupp Quincy Jones talks with Henry Louis Gates Jr. about his role in music history.
Music producer Quincy Jones detailed how he went from a college dropout to one of the most influential people in the music industry for a crowd of nearly 1,000 at Harvard University Thursday night.
A composer, conductor, producer, arranger, music executive and social activist throughout his five-decade career, Jones spoke at Harvard as the "culminating event" of a week-long residency at the university, said Thomas Lee, program manager of Harvard's Learning From Performers Program.
The event, which began with a short film on Jones' life and a performance by the Harvard Jazz Band, allowed students to ask Jones questions following a discussion between Jones and moderator Henry Lewis Gates, head of the Department of African American Studies at Harvard.
