Lesbian-centered general sites seem to be disappearing from the web. Most comprehensive sites are directed to a broader constitutency consisting of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgendered persons. I have included some examples of "historically" significant lesbian-centered sites that are still available on the web, though no longer rigorously maintained. Lesbian

Linda Brown was a black girl attending fifth grade at the public schools in Topeka, Kansas. She was denied admission into a white elementary school. The NAACP took up her case, along with similar ones in Kansas, South Carolina, Virginia, and Delaware. All five cases were argued together in December, 1952 by Thurgood Marshall, a black lawyer who headed the NAACP. The entire nation was on its tiptoes waiting for the courts decision. On May 17, 1954, the United States Supreme Court announced its decision that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal." The decision effectively denied the legal basis for segregation in Kansas and 20 other states with segregated classrooms and would forever change race relations in the United States. This site is a resource for information and source material about Brown v. Board of Education

Notable Folklore Books and Journals
One of the best ways to learn about what folklore is and how folklorists do their work is to read the books folklorists have published. Though no one list can include all the many good books that have been and are still being published about folklore, or all the folk traditions that folklorists study, this list is a start. These books should be available through a good public or university library; most of them also can be purchased from the university press that published them, at a good bookstore, or online. To learn about current work in the field of folklore, you should also become familiar with the world's leading folklore journals , which contain articles, opinions, research reports, and reviews of folklorists' work of all kinds.

In the summer of 1994, during the National Black Arts Festival held in Atlanta, Brent Wade was gracious enough to share with me his thoughts on his 1992 novel Company Man. The entrance of Wade, a black man in corporate America, into the literary world is somewhat of an anomaly. Since he does not spend the majority of his time in academic settings, the perspective he offers is unfettered by the academy with a candidness that is quite refreshing. In the following conversation, Wade reveals his thoughts on various issues - from racial alienation and black sexuality, to the history of music and Greek mythology.

In order for students to understand African-American history and the significance of the Civil War and Civil Rights Movement, they must first explore the harsh realities of slavery. Slavery is significant to American history because it highlights the beginning of racial and economic tensions our society that still struggles with today.
In a nation full of students who tend to take individual liberties and freedom for granted, this exploration of slavery provides students with a unique opportunity to see slaves evolve as real people rather than as group of people set in a period of history. Students need to understand that, along with their individual freedom, slaves also lost their culture, heritage, homes, and even their families.
From biographies to poetry, songs, folktales, and to freedom, the books and links contained herein offer students and teachers an opportunity to explore African-American history. This site provides a chronology of events as well as links to biographies of notable leaders in the movement toward freedom and civil rights.
