From the Director's Desk
From the Director's Desk: In March 2003, The Citadel Conference on the Civil Rights Movement in South Carolina significantly enhanced the reputation of The Citadel within the academic community and attracted what appears to be, for an academic event, an unprecedented amount of newspaper coverage and public attention within the state of South Carolina. We believe that the success of that conference, the growing popularity of courses offered on the modern civil rights movement, African American history, and African American military history, in addition to Charleston's unique African American cultural heritage provides a foundation to launch a related initiative that has great potential. The Citadel African American Studies program seeks to underscore the contributions of people of African descent to American history and emphasize the importance of diversity to the Corps of Cadets while promoting excellence in teaching, research, and community service.

Herbert Aptheker
Herbert Aptheker, a pioneering scholar of African American history, died 17 March 2003, at an assisted-care home in Mountain View, California. Herbert had continued his scholarly activity until complications from pneumonia incapacitated him shortly before his death at the age of 87.
Born in Brooklyn on 31 July 1915, Herbert was the youngest of five children of wealthy Russian immigrants. His father was a garment manufacturer who became known as the "Underwear King" and then lost his fortune in the early years of the Great Depression. Herbert later attributed his early interest in racial problems to his close relationship with his family's Trinidadian maid and his exposure to Black Belt poverty while accompanying his father on a business trip to Alabama. During the late 1930s, Herbert became involved in a campaign to help southern tenant farmers escape from debt peonage. His political activism was strengthened by his romantic involvement with Fay Aptheker, a Communist labor organizer who was also his first cousin. He joined the Communist Party in 1939 and married Fay three years later.
After receiving his undergraduate degree in geology at Columbia University, Herbert began graduate studies there in 1935 in the field of American history, with a special interest in slavery. His 1937 Master's thesis on Nat Turner's slave rebellion was followed by more general studies of slave resistance, including an article on slave maroons in the

African Americans have played a vital role in the history and culture of their country since its founding. An important part of the curriculum at the Institute for African American Studies is devoted to creative research on the lives and work of prominent African Americans and to placing them within their cultural context. On this page you will find brief biographical sketches of several key figures in African American history.
Benjamin Banneker
Benjamin Banneker's Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia Almanack and Epheremis, published during the years 1792-1797. He retired from tobacco farming to concentrate wholly upon his studies. He corresponded with Thomas Jefferson and urged Jefferson to work for the abolition of slavery.
Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth, a nationally known speaker on human rights for slaves and women, was born Isabella Baumfree, a slave in Hurley, New York, and spoke only Dutch during her childhood. Sold and resold, denied her choice in husband, and treated cruelly by her masters, Truth ran away in 1826, leaving all but one of her children behind. After her freedom was bought for $25, she moved to New York City in 1829 and became a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. In 1853, she helped form a utopian community called "The Kingdom," at Sing Sing, New York, which was soon disbanded following the death and possible murder of its leader. Truth was implicated in the scandal but courageously fought the falsehoods aimed at her. After the death of her son, she took the name Sojourner Truth to signify her new role as traveler telling the truth about slavery. She set out on June 1, 1843, walking for miles in a northeasterly direction with 25 cents in her pocket, and rested only when she found lodging offered by either rich or poor. First she attended religious meetings, then began to hold meetings herself that would bring audience members to tears. As she logged mile after mile, her fame grew and her reputation preceded her. Truth's popularity was enhanced by her biography written by the abolitionist Olive Gilbert, with a preface written by William Lloyd Garrison. In 1864, she was invited to the White House, where President Abraham Lincoln personally received her. Later she served as a counselor for the National Freedman's Relief Association, retiring in 1875 to Battle Creek, Michigan.

Resources Background Information: Ira Berlin's Freedom Soldiers and Noah Andre Trudeau's Like Men of War Berlin argues that black soldiers dealt with discrimination, exemplified in many forms, in the Union army. Black soldiers received less pay, could not serve as commissioned officers, served in separate units only, and were often assigned labor-intensive work or dangerous front-line duty more often than their white counterparts. Black soldiers did gain a sense of equality in fighting and dying alongside white soldiers, and did get to serve as liberators of slaves in many captured Southern communities. In addition, African American soldiers received training often beneficial after the war. White northern soldiers were forced to acknowledge that black soldiers could fight, and during the war Lincoln raised the issue of suffrage for African American soldiers. However, throughout the war, black soldiers could not escape the "white-dominated hierarchy" of the Union army. (Berlin 1998) Return to student worksheet Return to procedures

On Coming of Age The story on African American studies [" Coming of Age ," spring 2005] reminded me of a curious pattern I noticed a few years ago. Although students of all backgrounds packed many of the department's great courses, few were willing to make a full commitment to the department by completing majors in African American studies. As a recent graduate and African American studies major, I hope the department's renaissance eliminates that reluctance and encourages students to take full advantage of its offerings. Brian Budzicz (WCAS02)
Des Plaines, Ill. I applaud the development of the African American studies department. I am also happy to see that Jewish studies and other ethnic studies programs and offerings such as Asian American studies are underway on campus. The University has a long way to go to catch up with the rest of the Big Ten or Ivy League schools now offering courses, minors and majors in a program of study focused on the U.S.-Latino experience.
