Breastfeeding continues to be endorsed by professional organizations such as the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics as the best source of infant nutrition due to numerous benefits for both mother and infant.1,2 In fact, the Surgeon General's objectives, cited in Healthy People 2010, are to increase the proportion of mothers who breastfeed their babies during the early postpartum period, 6 months, and 1 year of age by 75%, 50%, and 25%, respectively.3 Breastfeeding has far-reaching benefits to both the mother and infant. For example, reports on breastfeeding have shown reductions in infant morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases,4-7 diarrheal incidences,5 and allergies7,8. Moreover, research has noted a decrease in adolescent obesity in infants who were fed breast milk more than formula or who were breastfed for longer periods.9 In addition, longer duration of breastfeeding has been associated with improvement of adult intelligence10 and protection against the development of asthma and wheeze in young children.11 Maternal benefits such as reduction in postpartum bleeding7,8 and the potential to protect against breast cancer have also been attributed to breastfeeding.12

E-Mail This Article Published on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch / Missouri African-American Youths Are Rejecting Army, Military Says by Ron Harris As he made his way to the cafeteria, Malcolm Cotton spotted the Army recruiters passing out video games and making their pitches from a long table they had set up in a hallway at his school. The recruiters made joining sound oh so terribly good - a $20,000 bonus for enlisting, $9,000 more if enlistees shipped out in the next 30 days and even better, $70,000 for college. Cotton, 18, a senior at Gateway High School, just walked on by without pausing, almost with disdain. "I love this country and I will defend this country if someone is really attacking us," he said. "But I don't agree with this war. I believe it's really nonsense. It's about power and taking oil. I really don't think we need to be over there fighting." Increasingly, young African-Americans have been turning away from the Army, many for the same reasons as Cotton, the military says. They don't agree with the war. They dislike President George W. Bush's handling of the military and foreign policies, and they are not willing to fight and possibly die for a cause they don't believe in. The number of African-American recruits, a cornerstone of the Army in recent years, has plummeted, the military says. And the Army is struggling to maintain a force large enough to wage a war on two fronts, Afghanistan and Iraq.

    38. African-American Youths Are Rejecting Army, Military Says
The number of africanamerican recruits, a cornerstone of the Army in recent would support their decision to join the military, according to the study.

    African-American Studies
Traditionally, African-American Studies has focused on the history of Black people in the United States. However, as reflected in the following sources, African-American Studies is highly interdisciplinary, and seeks to acquaint students with trends, issues, and forces that have shaped the Black experience in America. At the same time, such factors as cultural adaptation, institutional development, and group self-definition are examined, while surveying the contemporary status and condition of African-Americans. Many of the following indexes and abstracts, although they are multidisciplinary in scope, contain a wealth of information germane to African-Americans.
