BIOGRAPHY
Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Alberta Williams King and Martin Luther King, Sr. Alberta King's father was the minister at Ebenezer Baptist Church where Reverend King, Sr. and Reverend King, Jr. served as pa stors. Martin Luther King, Jr. earned his B.A. degree at Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia, a B.D. degree at Croser Theological Seminary, Chester, Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. degree at Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts. In 1954, Reverend King began his pastoral career at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. His involvement in the civil rights movement was the result of Mrs. Rosa Parks refusal to give up her seat to a white person. When the Montgomery Im provement Association was formed in December 1955, King was elected president of the association. The United States Supreme Court decision declaring Alabama law segregation on buses illegal was the victory from which King emerged as a national hero and r esulted in the formation of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He inspired people of all races and ethnic backgrounds to join in a peaceful, nonviolent protest against segregation. On August 29, 1963, he made his most famous speech, I Have a Dream , at the Lincoln Memorial to an audience, measured, at that time, to be the largest civil rights demonstration in the history of the United States.

National Coordinator, Annie L. Byrd Goals of the Martin Luther King, Jr. After-School Program The Martin Luther King, Jr. After-School Program has two principal goals:
  • 1. To bridge the "digital divide" between blacks and whites in America through the use of content with a black perspective; 2. To provide content about the history and culture of Africa and of people of African descent to African American youths.
The Content In 1909, W. E. B. Du Bois, the Harvard-trained historian, sociologist, journalist, and political activist, had an important idea. He dreamed of editing an "Encyclopedia Africana," a comprehensive compendium of "scientific" knowledge about the history, cultures, and social institutions of people of African descent: of Africans in the Old World, African Americans in the New World, and persons of African descent who had risen to prominence in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The Encyclopedia Africana would be the black equivalent of the Encyclopedia Britannica.

The 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka ruling made it clear that segregation would not be tolerated and that states must comply with federal law. In this program, filmed ten years after Brown, news correspondents report on the mixed progress made toward integrating public schools in Nashville, New Rochelle, New Orleans and Prince Edward County, Virginia. Stumbling blocks such as faculty segregation, busing and segregational zoning are examined. A discussion featuring Attorney General Robert Kennedy, Georgia Governor Carl Sanders and Ex-Secretary of the NAACP, Roy Wilkins concludes the program.

Gospel Unity Fest, service events make school holiday "a day on, not a day off"
By Gabrielle Sinclair Published: Friday, January 14, 2005
- Martin Luther King, Jr.
This weekend more than 750 USC students will join the rest of the country in celebrating the 76th birthday and honoring the works of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. through volunteering and unity.
Following the national theme, "Remember - Celebrate - Act: A Day On, Not a Day Off," included among the weekend's activities are a commemorative breakfast with speaker Patricia Sullivan, USC associate professor of history and African American Studies, a lecture at the USC School of Law, a day-of-service project transporting students to sites around the city and a celebratory Gospel Fest.
Probably the biggest event of the three-day weekend will take place Monday with the eighth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Coordinators, working with student groups around campus, have beaten last year's record of about 550 students by about 200 people registered. Coordinators hope to have a free T-shirt for every volunteer who participates along with their breakfasts.
