DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
Martin Luther King, Jr., was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929. He was the oldest son of the Reverend and Mrs. Martin Luther King. He was named Michael Luther after his father, but later the Reverend King changed both their names to Martin Luther in honor of the great church leader. Unhappily racial experiences made a deep and lasting impression on young Martin. One day his father took him to buy new shoes. When they sat down in the store, the clerk asked them to move to the back of the store. Dr. King took Martin by the hand and left the store rather than take that kind of treatment. Another time, the parents of boys Martin played with told him that they could no longer come out to play with him because they were white and he was black. Martin's feelings were hurt. His mother tried to explain about prejudice. She told him that blacks were no longer slaves, but they were not really free. Martin liked sports. He played baseball, basketball and wrestling. But he especially liked reading. He liked reading about famous people in black history. He found out what it took for them to overcome difficulties and become successful. He liked to learn new words and use them.

One has a poignant sense of King at the end of his twenties, famous, with a full diary, innumerable demands, a knife scar above his heart, and an unfulfilled mission in his soul."Peter J. The introduction is an extraordinary work of scholarship, not simply extending my understanding of King and the movement, but extending it by putting King in the larger contexts of the late fifties."Ira Berlin, Professor of History, University of Maryland at College Park

Booklist DESCRIPTION (back to top) Martin Luther King, Jr.'s ideashis call for racial equality, his faith in the ultimate triumph of justice, his insistence on the power of nonviolence to bring about a major transformation of American societyare as vital and timely as ever. The wealth of his writings, both published and unpublished, are now preserved in this authoritative, chronologically arranged, multi-volume edition. Volume Two begins with King's doctoral work at Boston University and ends with his first year as pastor of the historic Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. It includes papers from his graduate courses and a fully annotated text of his dissertation. There is correspondence with people King knew in his years prior to graduate school and a transcription of the first known recording of a King sermon. We learn, too, that Boston was where King met his future wife, Coretta Scott.

Christian Courier: Penpoints
Monday, July 10, 2000 The True Martin Luther King Any student of recent American history knows that one of the significant figures in the civil rights movement was Martin Luther King, Jr. And though some of his methods for achieving racial equality were not consistent with New Testament principles for changing wrong attitudes, America, nonetheless, owes a great deal to him. However, if the famous civil rights leader had been judged more by the content of his I May Not Get There With You: The True Martin Luther King, Jr. (Free Press, 2000). though he attempts to rationalize them. Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
Context for "I Have a Dream" Content for "I Have a Dream" "I Have a Dream" has been misconstrued and sentimentalized by some who focus only on the dream. The first half of the speech does not portray an American dream but rather catalogues an American nightmare. In the manner of Old Testament prophets, Frederick Douglass's "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" oration and Vernon Johns, King excoriated a nation that espoused equality while forcing blacks onto "a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity." Context for "I've Been to the Mountaintop" By the time of King's final speech, the heyday of the civil rights movement was over. Large riots in major cities and the divisive issue of the Vietnam War had shattered the liberal consensus for civil rights and created an atmosphere of crisis. Content for "I've Been to the Mountaintop"

Martin Luther King, Sr., Plants the Seeds of Change That life began in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929. The Reverend Michael King and his wife, Alberta, named their first son Michael Luther. Later, Reverend King changed his and his son's name to Martin Luther in honor of the great sixteenth-century reformer. Reverend King did more than preach about civil rights. He put his words into action. In January 1935, the Reverend organized a protest against the segregation of elevators at the local county courthouse. Eight months later he ran a drive to register African American voters. In 1939, he and several hundred others marched to Atlanta's city hall to demonstrate the political strength of African Americans. He believed his people could use their votes to change the laws and the lawmakers. Martin Luther King, Sr., was planting the seeds for a national civil rights movement.
