11526 Accounting for the Rise of Segregation in the American South.
In this essay, the history of post-Civil War slavery is described in relation to political and economic changes that altered the traditional structures of American southern societies. While slavery was officially abolished, the fundamental beliefs about the role of the African American in "white" society remained entrenched in Southern communities. This paper describes how racial segregation has developed in the American South from mid-19th century efforts to restructure the relations of (former) African American slaves in contexts of agricultural changes, economic demands, and deeply-seated beliefs about racial superiority. In some ways, the abolition of slavery can be seen as producing an alternate system of racist oppressions that persist to this day in the American South. 15 pgs. 19 sources.

Yolanda King to give Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Lecture
King By Franklin Crawford Actress and public speaker Yolanda King will return to campus to deliver the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Lecture on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 5 p.m. in Sage Chapel. King, first-born daughter of Coretta Scott King and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., appeared on campus in the role of Mama in A Raisin in the Sun, staged this fall at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts. The topic of her commemorative talk will be "Open My Eyes, Open My Soul: Discovering the Power of Diversity." The title is taken, in part, from a recently published anthology that King co-edited with Elodia Tate. Kenneth Clarke, director of Cornell United Religious Work (CURW), said King was selected to speak by the university's King Commemoration Committee last spring. "We felt she would be an ideal person to provide a perspective, as Dr. King's daughter and inheritor of his legacy, that would resonate with the campus as well as the local community," said Clarke, who met King when she was invited to speak at Penn State University's King Commemoration in 1998. "She is an eloquent speaker." Indeed, King is a much-sought-after motivational speaker and teacher. She has addressed

The noted literary critic and activist-scholar Houston A. Baker Jr., Susan Fox and George D. Beischer Professor of English at Duke University, will speak about "Remembering Race: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the Betrayal of Black Intellectuals" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, in Tripp Commons, Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St. Baker's talk will examine King's legacy as envisioned by black centrist and neo-conservative intellectuals. He suggests that the work of these intellectuals serves not only to subvert the best aims of King's life and labors, but also runs contrary to the best interests of the black majority. Considered one of America's most important literary scholars, Baker has written extensively - sometimes controversially - on black literature and poetry, the Harlem Renaissance, blues music, social progress and black culture generally. His provocative ideas have helped to shape the field of African-American studies. He has authored or edited more than 20 books, including, most recently, Turning South Again: Re-Thinking Modernism / Re-Reading Booker T., and Critical Memory: Public Spheres, African American Writing and Black Fathers and Sons in America.

Leader Characteristics Martin Luther King, Jr., was born Michael King, Jr., in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. His growth through childhood and adolescence was marked by healthy family relationships and excellent achievement in virtually every aspect of his life. His personality throughout life was well integrated. His father and both his grandfathers were prominent Baptist preachers, and his early life revolved around the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Atlanta, where his father was the pastor. Also in his youth, Martin demonstrated a somewhat exaggerated sense of personal moral responsibility and willingness to test God's will. He had a very strong relationship with his grandmother, who lived in the same household, and twice he threw himself out of an upstairs window when he felt guilty for some harm he felt he had done her. The first time was triggered by an accident which knocked her over and injured her slightly; the second time was when his grandmother died while he was off playing he felt he should have been nearby to help her. In other words, even as a young boy, MLK demonstrated a willingness to test God's judgment of him and to risk his own neck over issues implying some personal moral commitment.

Martin Luther King, Jr., and the African-American Social Gospel
Most recent studies of Martin Luther King, Jr., emphasize the extent to which his ideas were rooted in African-American religious traditions. Departing from King's own autobiographical account and from earlier studies that stressed the importance of King's graduate studies at Crozer Theological Seminary and Boston University, contemporary scholars have focused attention on King's African-American religious roots. The Martin Luther King, Jr., Papers Project has contributed to this scholarly trend by documenting the King family's long-standing ties to Ebenezer Baptist Church and the social gospel ministries of his father and grandfather, both of whom were civil rights leaders as well as pastors. this uncritical attitude could not last long, for it was contrary to the very nature of my being. I had always been the questioning and precocious type. At the age of 13 I shocked my Sunday School class by denying the bodily resurrection of Jesus. From the age of thirteen on doubts began to spring forth unrelentingly. Quite often we say the church has no place in politics, forgetting the words of the Lord, 'The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath [anointed] me to preach the Gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and the recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised."

A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. H istory is indeed made up of significant events which shape our future and outstanding leaders who influence our destiny. Martin Luther King's contributions to our history place him in this inimitable position. In his short life, Martin Luther King was instrumental in helping us realize and rectify those unspeakable flaws which were tarnishing the name of America . The events which took place in and around his life were earth shattering, for they represented an America which was hostile and quite different from America as we see it today. Martin Luther King, Jr. catapulted to fame when he came to the assistance of Rosa Parks, the Montgomery, Alabama Black seamstress who refused to give up her seat on a segregated Montgomery bus to a White passenger. In those days American Blacks were confined to positions of second class citizenship by restrictive laws and customs. To break these laws would mean subjugation and humiliation by the police and the legal system. Beatings, imprisonment and sometimes death were waiting for those who defied the System Black Americans needed a Martin Luther King, but above all
