Demetrius is a senior History Major and African-American Studies Minor at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. During winter break at his home in Chicago, where he was born and raised, he found a link on the Internet to the MLK Papers Project while doing some research on King. He has been studying different periods of the African experience in America and is excited to help preserve the legacy of one of the most important Civil Rights Leaders in the history of America. His major contribution to the MLK Papers is a day to day chronology of MLK. Eric is soon to be in his first year as a Grad student at the University of Washington. His area will be China Studies with a focus on nonviolent revolutions in China. He has been studying the Civil Rights struggle for quite some time and has been involved with a number of grassroots organizations still fighting for many of the issues King addressed over 30 years ago (especially those issues emphasized in King's last years). His focus on King's nonviolent tactics, and his deepening interest in what still could come from that foundation, have brought him here to the Project. "And what an amazing breadth of scope, and immense depth of knowledge, they have shown for the subject matter!"

The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, often referred to as the Freedmen's Bureau, was established in the War Department by an act of March 3, 1865. The Bureau supervised all relief and educational activities relating to refugees and freedmen, including issuing rations, clothing and medicine. The Bureau also assumed custody of confiscated lands or property in the former Confederate States, Border States, District of Columbia, and Indian Territory. This site includes bureau records created or maintained by bureau headquarters, the assistant commissioners and the state superintendents of education and included personnel records and a variety of standard reports concerning bureau programs and conditions in the states.

Martin Luther King, Jr.:
An Oral History of His Religious Witness and His Life by
Russel Moldovan A new book on Martin Luther King, Jr. that looks at his life from a perspective never done before: through oral history! Here are what academic scholars are saying about this work:
"Russel Moldovan is perhaps the first evangelical thinker to treat Martin Luther King, Jr.'s preaching, philosophy, and life in an honest, creative, and highly objective fashion. Drawing on the testimonies of persons who knew and heard King preach, Moldovan rightly suggests that the civil rights leader affords a model for conservative Christians who mistakenly separate religion from social and political concerns. His deep and insightful reflections on King's holistic faith, prophetic preaching, charismatic spirit, magnetic personality, and powerful legacy cannot be ignored by the serious student of American History." Lewis V. Baldwin Professor of Religious Studies Vanderbilt University "Russel Moldovan's study of Martin Luther King, Jr. draws deeply and carefully from the memories of friends, parishioners, and colleagues who were blessed to hear King preach. Through his exercise in oral history, Moldovan confirms the Christian identity and purposes of one of the greatest preachers and orators of our century." The Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Three Decades Later: How Fares the Dream?
How Fares the Dream?

by Russell L. Adams, Ph.D.
Memories of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. are annually rekindled by the national commemoration of the date of his birth, even as the details of his struggles blur in our collective memory. THE BLACK COLLEGIAN was founded in 1970, two years after Dr. King was assassinated. College students were deeply involved in the movement symbolized by him, especially those who served through the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee or SNCC. Those 30-years-old and under have no personal recollection of Dr. King’s era. This article is intended to help the college generation answer the question of “How Fares the Dream?"

Here is the most comprehensive reappraisal of the leaders and events that brought the civil rights movement from the south to the rest of the nation from 1965 through the 1980's. 1. The Time Has Come (1964-1966) Explores the influence of Malcolm X and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in their call for "Black Power" and the 1966 Meredith March Against Fear in Mississippi. 2. Two Societies (1965-1968) Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference travel to Chicago in an attempt to apply southern movement tactics to the urban north. In Detroit, frustration and anger build to urban violence as blacks and law officers clash on city streets and America appears to be a nation out of control. 3. Power! (1966-1968)
