New Entries in Red Adam Abdul Hakeem
Twenty-year-old Adam Abdul Hakeem was the first person in American judicial history to be found innocent by reason of self defense in a police shooting case. This gripping documentary tells the story of Hakeem, (formerly named Larry Davis), who tried to extricate himself from a police-run drug ring in which he had participated for six years. In doing so, it examines the relationships between law enforcement agencies, the criminal justice system, and the African-American community. ( more Adam Clayton Powell

The " " lecture series was named after Harlem Renaissance writer Richard Bruce Nugent’s short story on gender, race, and sexuality. The Harlem Renaissance movement, often referred to as the New Negro movement in the 1920s and 30s, delved into issues of race, race consciousness, and identity through visual, literary arts and philosophical debates. Considered a "gay rebel" of that era, Nugent boldly addressed the issue of same-sex relationshipsa highly charged issue for that day and even ours. In that vein, the series will reflect the diversity, intersection, and complexity of subjects undertaken by scholars, writers, artists, and community activists in the discipline of African American and Diaspora Studies. The series will also serve as an outreach and collaborative mechanism to Greater Nashville and Vanderbilt.

The African and African American Studies Program is a multidisciplinary, second-major program focusing on the African and African American experience. Understanding and appreciating African and African American history, literature and culture can benefit students who plan to work in any field serving the public, and will prove useful in all aspects of life. African and African American studies courses are cross-listed with the English, history, American studies, anthropology, economics, sociology and psychology departments. AFAM 20575. "Drop" dates: refund, ; last,
Enrollment limit: 3 The course is meant, first of all, as an occasion in which students and teacher will examine the philosophy and spirituality of three of the greatest peace educators of the 20th Century. The three include M. Gandhi, who introduced Satyagraha into the fight for Indian Independence, Abraham J. Heschel, Scholar of the Prophets and Chief Rabbi of the 60s Civil Rights Movement and Martin Luther King, conscience of a nation that still fails to understand how radical his message was. Through the examination of these figures, we will attempt to work out an understanding, in general, of what distinguishes marks real peace education from the counterfeit. Having just ended the most murderous centuries in history, and already working on a worthy successor. Such an understanding surely is of the utmost importance. So, in other words, we will end with this question: How can we learn, as Gandhi, Heschel and King taught, the art of educating for peace?

African American studies is an interdisciplinary program designed to enrich knowledge of the experience of African Americans from the past to the present, both within and beyond the United States. Attention is given to race as a critical tool of analysis for explaining the allocation of economic resources, the formation of personal and group identity, and the changing nature of political behavior. Study of African American experiences provides insight into secular cultural practices, intellectual traditions, religious doctrines and practices, and social institutions with attention to issues of class, gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Major requirements: Students must complete eleven courses and a thesis. Students must complete either African American Studies 457 or African American Studies 458 (senior thesis). In addition students should fulfill the following requirements from the courses approved for the major: one course must have an experiential component; one course must be a junior-senior seminar.
