Rayburn House Office Building Introduction Good morning, Congressman Burton and Members of the Committee. I am Richard Kaplan, M.D., of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). I am a Senior Investigator in the Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program and I coordinate NCI's extramural clinical research on prostate cancer treatment. I am accompanied today by Jeffrey White, M.D., Director of the NCI's Office of Cancer Complementary and Alternative Medicine. I am pleased to appear before you today to describe NCI's prostate cancer research program and our growing interest in complementary and alternative approaches to prostate and other cancers. The Congress has asked NIH to make prostate cancer a top priority in allocating funding increases; to accelerate spending on prostate cancer; and to consult closely with the research community. Under Dr. Klausner's leadership, NCI has undertaken a vigorous effort to respond in all of these areas. The nature and magnitude of the burden of prostate cancer has been tracked by NCI's surveillance program, and we estimate that about 180,000 men will be newly diagnosed with prostate cancer this year and about 37,000 will die. Prostate cancer exacts a particularly devastating toll on African American men; incidence rates are substantially higher among African Americans, and mortality rates in African American men remain more than twice as high as rates in white men.

I am Richard Klausner, M.D., Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). I am accompanied today by Harold Varmus, M.D., Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). We are pleased to appear before you today to describe our response to the Congressional request to submit 1) a report outlining activities NIH is undertaking to enhance prostate cancer research programs and 2) a report outlining NIH's professional judgment for prostate cancer research for the next five years. The Congress has also asked NIH to make prostate cancer a top priority in allocating funding increases; to accelerate spending on prostate cancer; and to consult closely with the research community. The nature and magnitude of the burden of prostate cancer has been tracked by NCI's surveillance program, and we estimate that about 180,000 men will be newly diagnosed with prostate cancer this year and about 37,000 will die. African-American Studies
Traditionally, African-American Studies has focused on the history of Black people in the United States. However, as reflected in the following sources, African-American Studies is highly interdisciplinary, and seeks to acquaint students with trends, issues, and forces that have shaped the Black experience in America. At the same time, such factors as cultural adaptation, institutional development, and group self-definition are examined, while surveying the contemporary status and condition of African-Americans. Many of the following indexes and abstracts, although they are multidisciplinary in scope, contain a wealth of information germane to African-Americans.

This guide to the study of Black history and culture is the first "library wide resource guide" to the Library of Congress's African-American collections. Covers four specific areas: colonization, abolition, migrations, and the WPA.
Beginning Library Research on African American Studies
Stanford University Libraries contain many titles on the historical and contemporary experience of African Americans, making it an excellent place for students conducting research in this area. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of African American Studies, relevant titles are often dispersed throughout the general collection depending upon subject matter.

skip to content About NINR Legislation/appropriations DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES Statement by Dr. Patricia A. Grady
Director, National Institute of Nursing Research on Fiscal Year 1999 President's Budget Request for the National Institute of Nursing Research
Mr. Chairman and Members of the Committee: The President in his FY 2000 budget has proposed that the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) receive $65.3 million, an increase of $1.5 million over the comparable FY 1999 appropriation. Including the estimated allocation for AIDS, total support provided for NINR is $71.73 million, an increase of $1.7 million over the FY 1999 appropriation. Funds for NINR efforts in AIDS research are included within the Office of AIDS Research budget request. NINR-supported nursing research provides a scientific base for patient care and is used by many disciplines among healthcare professionals-especially by the nation's 2.5 million nurses. NINR-supported research is not disease specific, nor is it dedicated to a particular age group or population. Nursing research addresses the issues that examine the core of patients' and families' personal encounters with illness, treatment, and disease prevention. NINR's primary activity is clinical research, and most of the studies we support directly involve patients. The basic science we support is linked to patient problems.

The topic was disease management and genetics. FRIENDS, an independent, non-profit membership organization, supports the NINR by promoting public awareness of the role of nursing research in advancing health care practice in the United States. Those attending the briefing included Congressional members and staff, nurse researchers and administrators, and members of public and private organizations having a special interest in the topic. In providing examples of current nursing research supported by the NINR, Dr. Grady mentioned:
