African American Studies African American Studies Program Goals

The African American studies program affords students a comprehensive understanding of African heritage in this country through examination of African links; the contributions of African American people in the growth and development of the United States; African American community, culture, lifestyles, political activity, religious development, community service and resource assistance; as well as the prognosis and potential for social change. Curriculum
The African American Studies Department offers both a major and a minor in African American Studies. The major in African American Studies leads to the bachelor of arts degree and requires 39 semester hours of course work; the minor requires 21 semester hours of course work. A variety of courses offered in the department analyze the African American experience in this country, and many of these fulfill general studies and multicultural requirements. Students majoring in African American studies must consult with a departmental adviser when choosing courses. Students desiring secondary licensure in social studies with a major in African American Studies should consult the Department of Secondary Teacher Education. Academic credit for travel and study in Africa can be coordinated through Metro State's Institute for International Education.

Web site: http://www.uiowa.edu/~afriam African American World Studies focuses on the study of people of the African diaspora, particularly in the United States. African American World Studies is interdisciplinary, drawing cooperating faculty from American studies, anthropology, art, education, English, French, geography, history, political science, Spanish and Portuguese, sociology, and women's studies. Because a thorough understanding of African American and African cultures cannot be achieved through study restricted to the perspective of a single discipline, all students are required to pursue courses in both humanities and social sciences. African American world studies continually expands its perspectives by developing or cross-listing courses that fuse the knowledge drawn from many disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.

The Department of African American Studies provides a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary education emphasizing informed multicultural, analytical, and critical approaches to the historical development; societies; cultures; economic, social, and political problems; contributions; and potentials of Black people of the Americas and Africa. Coursework in African American Studies offers students opportunities to learn as well as practice various modes of inquiry which will prepare them for graduate studies and/or occupations that require writing and critical analysis. Students are trained to investigate historical, cultural, economic, religious, political, and literary phenomena and are encouraged to formulate new thinking based on thoughtful reflection on personal and community experiences. Assignments that empower students and give them skills to creatively understand and contribute to their communities and formulate informed independent views are central to all African American Studies courses. Students are especially encouraged to articulate their social and cultural experiences and to explore the world without submitting to personal, community, and group-held biases and limitations.
