African and African American Studies 40 Gender Identities and Politics in Africa This interdisciplinary course explores the constructions of gender identities in different African socio-cultural contexts. The emphasis is on contemporary Africa, although we will discuss some of the historical framework of these identities. We will read historical accounts of gender in some pre-colonial African societies, investigate the impact of colonialism, and examine gender in some anti- colonial movements. We will also analyze gender in urban and rural contexts, and address such questions as homosexuality and gay rights. Coly Anthropology 12 From Lover to Mother, and then to Witch: The Politics of Gender in Art How can we understand the structural, sexual, and sensual tensions between men and women expressed through art? What does art "say" about relationships between the sexes? How are gender ideologies expressed and reinforced in art? This seminar takes and anthropological look at a wide range of art from around the world, focusing on gender constructions as expressed in art. Campbell Art History 16 Age and Status in the Ancient World Although a biological fact, age is variably valued through the mediation of cultural and societal processes. This class will study the ways in which ancient Mediterranean cultures conceptualized and represented age in their art. Usually highlighting youthful male adults, images both reflected societal norms and reinforced them. Children and the elderly were also represented in ways that speak both to reality and to its ideological transformations. The class will make use of an exhibition on ancient Greek childhood at the Hood Museum and will consider how criteria of age intersected with gender in the construction of hierarchy.

In an effort to emphasize the importance of diversity on its Charleston, S.C., campus, The Citadel announced plans last month to launch a degree program with emphasis on African Americans. The 15-hour minor in African American studies, which will be offered this fall, is designed to encourage an appreciation for the contributions of people of African descent. Through the interdisciplinary study of history, politics, English, sociology and culture, the program aims to highlight the significance of race, gender and ethnicity in leadership. "We want to prepare students to think critically, to express themselves creatively, and to respect culture and gender diversity," said Dr. Marcus Cox, a history professor who spearheaded the program's development. "Along with that we want to encourage faculty to share their expertise with the community and to maintain a community service component that (encourages) intellectual, cultural and spiritual growth of The Citadel and the community."
