African American World Studies is interdisciplinary, drawing cooperating faculty from American studies, anthropology, art, education, English, French, geography, history, political science, Spanish and Portuguese, sociology, and women's studies. Because a thorough understanding of African American and African cultures cannot be achieved through study restricted to the perspective of a single discipline, all students are required to pursue courses in both humanities and social sciences. African American world studies continually expands its perspectives by developing or cross-listing courses that fuse the knowledge drawn from many disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.

African American culture: Some sites you should bookmark
January 1999
Vol. 60, No. 1 by Elna L. Saxton and Jo McClamroch This piece began with a focus on education-related and other scholarly sites. Since African American Studies (or Black Studies or Afro-American Studies) has been an established academic discipline at dozens of institutions since the late 1960s, we were confident we would quickly be overrun with quality sites. It soon became apparent that there are many quality sites, and that to focus only on academic sites was too narrow for this article. Our resource list, therefore, expanded beyond academia into a total of five categories: Getting started, Educational sites/research centers, Organizations/Associations, Afrocen-tric sites, and E-journals/news services. We do deliberately highlight more African American than Africana sites. At the same time, we do not suggest that we could capture the essence of or exhaust the number of potentially valuable sites for any culture's links, be it African American, Asian American, Native American, or any ethnic group. At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, the Internet is a mother lode of information for cultural information.

Home Programs of Study Help African and African-American Studies Program of Study The B.A. program in African and African-American Studies provides a context in which College students might examine African and African-American cultures and communities from a rigorous, interdisciplinary perspective. Its intellectual justification lies in the direction taken by African and African-American studies over the past few years, which has been characterized by a growing insistence on the integrity and coherence of links (historical, sociocultural, and experiential) between Africa and its diasporas. Students in other fields of study may also complete a minor in African and African-American Studies. Information follows the description of the major.
Program Requirements
It is expected that the general education requirements in the social sciences have been met before a student enters the program. A student who has not done so should meet them during the first year of the program. The major requires a B.A. thesis and ten courses distributed according to the following guidelines: Five basic courses dealing with African and African-American materials These must include: (1) African Civilization (SOSC 22500-22600) or African Civilization in Africa (SOSC 26600-26700), and (2) a combination of three courses in African or African-American subjects approved by the Program Coordinating Committee. Because the African civilization sequence is used to meet a requirement in the major, students should take another civilization sequence to meet their general education requirement.

Courses in African American Studies generate broader awareness and appreciation of the world that is a fundamental goal of a liberal education. African American Studies can meet the diverse needs and interests of a variety of students, whether black or non-black, in several ways. First, it enhances understanding of both the black experience and the societies of which African Americans are a part. It provides a significant means of understanding and examining American society, the diversity and pluralistic nature of the black experience, and important continuities and commonalties across national and racial boundaries.

Information about EAP study abroad opportunities for African American You should also complete all, or most, of your general education requirements.
http://ias.berkeley.edu/bpsa/majors/AfricanAmericanStudies.htm
This website is a guide for African American studies students who have an interest in studying abroad. You can get more information by visiting the EAP website or by talking to an advisor in 160 Stephens. The African American Studies department encourages its students to take advantage of the opportunity to complete some portion of their undergraduate study through the University's Education Abroad Program. African American Studies majors can broaden their horizons by studying African art and music in Ghana, Black Cinema in South Africa, or even literature and political ideology of the Caribbean in Barbados. Because all courses taken through EAP are accepted as UC courses, with careful planning students may spend as much as a year of study in a foreign university with no loss of time in completing their degrees. Studying abroad provides a great opportunity for African American Studies majors to understand their course work in a broader context. By exposing yourself to a variety of different cultures and experiences you have a better framework with which to critique and contribute to academic topics of interest. Furthermore, there are a variety of African American Studies related courses offered at foreign universities that are not available at Berkeley. Back to top Study abroad programs are available for students of many class levels. Your choice of when to study abroad depends on your personal progress in the major and the type of coursework that you hope to study while abroad. To determine what is the best time period for you consult with your major advisor at the African American Studies office in 664A Barrows Hall.

State University of New York - Albany Toward a Critical Demography of Neo-mulattos:
Structural Change and Diversity within the Black Population ABSTRACT The number of people in the United States identifying with more than one race has increased in recent years. An explosion of literature on mixed race populations has emerged. However, the focus of recent studies has been individual-level or medial-level at best. We focus on Neo-mulattos. The argument raised here is that this population is best understood in the context of changes in the social structure relative to racism. The purpose of this paper is to articulate the nature of Neo-mulattos and the potential issues for public policy and future research.
