http://www.uga.edu/iaas/
The Institute for African American Studies has evolved at The University of Georgia as an academic program of study since 1969, though its current status dates from 1992. It is dedicated to the production of creative research on the achievements of African Americans and to exciting instruction for a diverse community of thinkers. In addition, it serves as a cultural repository and resource for the citizenry of Georgia. The Institute offers several courses in the core curriculum. Students wishing to earn a certificate or undergraduate degree in African American Studies can do so by taking the recommended courses approved by the Director. The intent is to be both intellectually exciting and rigorously challenging. Often views might seem unusually innovative. Many students of the Institute are interested in professional study and scholarly research beyond the undergraduate level. Others might begin to lay out a systematic plan for thoughtful public service.
The Role of African American Studies
Western Civilization has been a reliable means to understand world cultures for many generations, but the rapidly changing demography of the United States requires a more profound awareness of cultural resources by thinkers of color. As seekers after human truth, African Americanists should test traditional assumptions about race to help students make more enlightened choices for themselves and their civilization. The primary objective of an African American studies curriculum, regardless of race or color, is education for positive and productive citizenship. Hence, a reasonable list follows:

African American Education Program
African American Curriculum AAEP offers an African American Studies curriculum as part of Eastern's liberal arts program and cultural diversity requirements for a BA/BS degree. African American Studies courses provide understanding and appreciation of the universal African American experiences today and historically from an Afrocentric world view. They also give students the opportunity to evaluate the influence of African American culture on the entire human civilization. All Eastern students are encouraged to take African American Studies courses. Many courses are cross-listed with other departments such as History, English and Art.
African American Studies Minor Students taking a minimum of 20 credit hours in African American Studies are qualified to declare a minor in African American Studies. We advise students to consult an AAEP advisor or the director regarding their selection of courses for this minor.

Introduction The following six Web sites were created as models to suggest ways to integrate the World Wide Web and videoconferencing into classroom learning. African-American History was chosen as a topic because of its importance, popularity and the wealth of Internet resources available on the topic. What we hope to add to this richness are some specific strategies for integrating the Web into learning. So rather than merely send learners to a Web site, we've arranged separate formats designed to support different kinds of learning. Read the blurbs below or check out Working the Web for Education to help you decide which activities you might want to use.
Hotlist Black History Hotlist is a starting point for anyone studying African-American events and issues. If you have your own learning activities in mind, you might use these links as raw material or the place to begin independent research.
Interactive Treasure Hunt If you want to test your knowledge of African-American history (and even develop an essay on the topic), try the . When you know the background information on a topic, learning more and feeling connected to the subject come naturally.

    Research Opportunities
The Department of African American Studies provides important research opportunities to its students, faculty and for the larger community people and organizations interested in joint projects that would benefit our society. The African American Studies faculty submits external and internal research funding applications, and work towards using research to enhance the understanding of the African, African American and the African Diaspora people and society within our global reality. Among the department's current plans are its recently submitted proposal to the Illinois Department of Public HealthHIV/AIDS Sectionon introducing workshops, seminars and courses targeting Black young men and women on the HIV/AIDS crisis and on making young people important agents in the fight against the continued spread of HIV/AIDS in our communities. Another recent grant application is the Fulbright-Hays grant proposal submitted to the Federal Department of Education, to take selected students and faculty and K-12 teachers from western Illinois region to Ghana, West Africa, as part of its area studies, languages and cultural plurality programs. The WIU's African American Studies department's vision is to lead in using research to benefit the grassroots, especially on issues relevant to the regeneration of the African, the African American and the African Diaspora communities. As a community-oriented department, the department is eager to bring the research agenda of higher education to helping the common person and the downtrodden communities of our world.

The Department of African American Studies provides a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary education emphasizing informed multicultural, analytical, and critical approaches to the historical development; societies; cultures; economic, social, and political problems; contributions; and potentials of Black people of the Americas and Africa. Coursework in African American Studies offers students opportunities to learn as well as practice various modes of inquiry which will prepare them for graduate studies and/or occupations that require writing and critical analysis. Students are trained to investigate historical, cultural, economic, religious, political, and literary phenomena and are encouraged to formulate new thinking based on thoughtful reflection on personal and community experiences. Assignments that empower students and give them skills to creatively understand and contribute to their communities and formulate informed independent views are central to all African American Studies courses. Students are especially encouraged to articulate their social and cultural experiences and to explore the world without submitting to personal, community, and group-held biases and limitations.
