African American Studies
African American Studies Minor
Coordinators: Leslie Patrick, Joel Wade The African American experience is directly and inextricably embedded in the history and culture of the United States. As an interdisciplinary field, African American studies is concerned with the systematic investigation of the history, culture, political economy, literature, art, and languages of people of African descent in the United States and their contributions to the United States and to the world. The African American studies minor is a way of educating all students about black experiences and developing in them an understanding and appreciation of the life and history of peoples of African ancestry in the United States and thus move toward a more comprehensive view of life and history in the United States generally. By offering students opportunities to gain knowledge of this history and experience, an African American studies minor affirms black identity and heritage, fosters understanding, respect, and appreciation of diversity, and better prepares students for life in a multicultural society.

Mission The African American has been pivotal to the history, development and culture of America from colonial times to the present. The African American experience is unique among the American ethnic groups. No other group entered the society so completely as involuntary immigrants, and no other group was subjected to such fully institutionalized degradation. The effects of slavery, segregation and oppression continue to influence the patterns of Black-White relationships. The major and courses here at UCR offer students an in-depth as well as a comparative study of the African American experience. Since there can be no real understanding of this specialty without attention to Black Africa, students also have an opportunity to select courses pertaining to Africa and Africans in the Diaspora (e.g., Caribbean, Latin and South America) offered within and outside the Department. Presently, African American students comprise nearly 5 percent of the student population at the University of California Riverside. The African-American Ethnic Studies faculty component consists of Professor Ralph Crowder, a historian and Professor Carolyn Murray, a psychologist. Home Programs of Study Help African and African-American Studies Program of Study The B.A. program in African and African-American Studies provides a context in which College students might examine African and African-American cultures and communities from a rigorous, interdisciplinary perspective. Its intellectual justification lies in the direction taken by African and African-American studies over the past few years, which has been characterized by a growing insistence on the integrity and coherence of links (historical, sociocultural, and experiential) between Africa and its diasporas. Students in other fields of study may also complete a minor in African and African-American Studies. Information follows the description of the major.
Program Requirements
It is expected that the general education requirements in the social sciences have been met before a student enters the program. A student who has not done so should meet them during the first year of the program. The major requires a B.A. thesis and ten courses distributed according to the following guidelines: Five basic courses dealing with African and African-American materials These must include: (1) African Civilization (SOSC 22500-22600) or African Civilization in Africa (SOSC 26600-26700), and (2) a combination of three courses in African or African-American subjects approved by the Program Coordinating Committee. Because the African civilization sequence is used to meet a requirement in the major, students should take another civilization sequence to meet their general education requirement.
