Statement Of Mission Mission In support of the mission of Old Dominion University to place "...special emphasis... upon understanding the perspectives of women, minorities, and non-Western cultures", the Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity (ISRE) seeks to develop, promote and implement academic, research and public service programs that focus on the study of race and ethnicity in Hampton Roads, Virginia, the nation, and throughout the African and Asian diasporas. The political, social, economic, cultural and historical experiences of African Americans, Filipino Americans and communities of color are important dimensions emphasized in the work of the Institute. Moreover, the Institute seeks to establish as a major archive and research center in the southeast United States focusing on the experiences of African Americans and Filipino Americans.
Consistent with the University's commitment to "providing the highest quality of instruction" and supporting "faculty participation in the discovery, synthesis, application and creation of new knowledge and art forms", the Institute promotes high quality teaching and rigorous policy-oriented research emphasizing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches, as well as the methods of the traditional social sciences and humanities disciplines. ISRE seeks to cooperate with groups and organizations throughout the region, and on campus it partners with a variety of academic departments and student programs including Asian Studies, Women Studies, the Filipino American Student Cultural Center, the Hugo A. Owens African American Student Cultural Center, and the Office of Multicultural Student Services.

During his opening address to the world's first Pan-African Conference in August 1900, American civil rights leader and author W.E.B. DuBois made an observation that would echo throughout the next century when he said, "The problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color-line." In response to the 2002 Black History Month theme, "The Color Line Revisited: Is Racism Dead?" Columbia professor and DuBois scholar Manning Marable spoke about DuBois' prediction and its resonance at the beginning of the 21st century.

About the Faculty Elizabeth Alexander Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania, 1992, is Associate Professor (Adjunct) of African-American Studies. She is the author of three books of poems, The Venus Hottentot Body of Life (1996), and Antebellum Dream Book (2001). Her collection of essays on African-American poetry, painting, and popular culture, The Black Interior , was published in 2004. Her poems, short stories, and critical prose have been widely published in such periodicals and journals as Signs American Literary History Callaloo The Paris Review American Poetry Review The Kenyon Review The Village Voice The Women's Review of Books , and in many anthologies. Her verse play, "Diva Studies," was produced at the Yale School of Drama in May 1996. Alexander has taught at the University of Chicago, where she won the Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, New York University’s Graduate Creative Writing Program, and Smith College, where she was Grace Hazard Conkling Poet-in-Residence, first director of the Poetry Center at Smith College, and member of the founding editorial collective for the feminist journal

History and Structure
In 1993-94, African American Studies developed a unique graduate program in cooperation with a number of other departments and programs across the university. This program, which grew out of the M.A. program that African and African American studies had launched in 1978, now offers a Joint Doctoral Degree in African-American Studies and another field or discipline. The program became a department in July 2000. African American Studies offers a combined Ph.D. in conjunction with several other departments and programs. Departments and programs which currently offer a combined Ph.D. with African American Studies are: American Studies Anthropology English French ... Sociology , and Spanish and Portuguese.

    An introduction to the traditions, life and experiences of Africans in the United States. The course utilizes learning resources from a variety of disciplines including history, literature and the social sciences.

    B.A. Degree Requirements Students must complete at least 120 credits to graduate, including at least 30 credits in the major. Students complete 30-36 3xxx, 4xxx, or 5xxx course credits, including a 3xxx, 4xxx, or 5xxx statistics or methods course approved by the undergraduate adviser; sequences in African American history, African history; 12 credits in group concentration and 6 credits outside the concentration; at least 3 credits from a course that examines gender issues; one 4xxx or 5xxx seminar or proseminar; and a senior paper. Students may receive a maximum of 2 credits toward the major for approved domestic or foreign internships. Specific requirements vary depending on selected track. Consult the student handbook of the Department of African American and African Studies for details. Students selecting this major should consult with the undergraduate adviser to establish an approved program. Language Requirements CLA language requirement must be met in one of the following languages: French, German, Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, Arabic, Swahili.
