    Description
The intent of African American studies is to provide a systematic investigation and analysis of the thoughts, experiences, and conditions under which people of African descent live in the United States. Courses making up the concentration will draw upon different disciplines to explore how African Americans relate to each other, to other Americans, and to other people of African descent living in the Americas, Europe, and Africa. Students majoring in the field should understand how blacks shape their lives in particular historical, social, political-economic, and cultural contexts. Independent study or fieldwork is highly recommended to allow the student to study a particular topic in depth or to apply what she has learned in the classroom to issues affecting African Americans in the larger world. Students are also encouraged to take advantage of opportunities for internships, study abroad, and exchange at other institutions.

While developing students' analytical and critical thinking skills through the exploration of the Atlantic World, African American and Diaspora Studies as a discipline contributes to broader debates about race, gender, culture, class, politics, sexuality, and color. As an intellectual endeavor, the Program in African American and Diaspora Studies also advances research and scholarship within the growing field of African diaspora studies via academic conferences, lecture series, fora, and faculty publications. Courses in African American and Diaspora Studies will allow you to better grapple with the ideas of plurality and diversity in our multicultural and multiethnic society; such ideas and ideals are integral to understanding today’s complex global realities. The contributions of people of African descent are considerable human achievements in the areas of literature, philosophy, science, music, politics, and visual culture. Concentrators in African American and Diaspora Studies go on to pursue Graduate Studies in a variety of fields as well as careers in government, journalism, business, law, K-12 and post-secondary education, engineering and public service.

The Interdisciplinary Studies Program-sponsored minor in African American Studies is interdisciplinary because the various experiences of African Americans are impossible to compartmentalize within a single discipline. back to site index Requirements for the Minor in African American Studies The minor in African American Studies is an option within the Interdisciplinary Studies Program. African American World Studies is interdisciplinary, drawing cooperating faculty from American studies, anthropology, art, education, English, French, geography, history, political science, Spanish and Portuguese, sociology, and women's studies. Because a thorough understanding of African American and African cultures cannot be achieved through study restricted to the perspective of a single discipline, all students are required to pursue courses in both humanities and social sciences. African American world studies continually expands its perspectives by developing or cross-listing courses that fuse the knowledge drawn from many disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.
