Institute for the Study of Religion and Culture
in Africa and the African Diaspora
The Institute for the Study of Religion and Culture in Africa and the African Diaspora (ISRCAD) is the research arm of the African and African-American Studies Program at Notre Dame. Its purpose is to encourage and provide support for the interdisciplinary study of the histories, religions, languages, and cultures of peoples of Africa and the African Diaspora from antiquity to the present. Through its slate of projected activities—which includes an annual colloquium, a lecture series, a research annual, a postdoctoral fellowship program, and a visiting scholars program—is hoped that ISRCAD will further enhance the intellectual climate at Notre Dame for advanced research on a range of pivotal issues related to Africa and the African Diaspora. It is also hoped that it will provide a supportive and vibrant intellectual community in which humanists and social scientists from a broad cross-section of disciplines can examine these issues. ISRCAD's activities will also help to forward the threefold of the African and African-American Studies Program: (1) to provide a disciplined and rigorous intellectual environment for the study of issues related to both Africa and the African Diaspora; (2) to promote educational and cultural events that increase public awareness about the histories, literatures, languages, and cultures of African and Afrodiasporan peoples; and (3) to provide resources that encourage and facilitate the rigorous interdisciplinary study of Africa and the African Diaspora within and beyond the classroom.

The African-American Studies Program at Colby is an interdisciplinary program of courses designed to expose students to the history and culture of African-Americans in the United States and to connect those experiences to the literatures, histories and cultures of Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Students may elect a minor in the program built around courses in anthropology, economics, government, history, literature, music, religion, and sociology. Students may also elect to pursue a combined African American and American Studies major. In the late 1960s, a College committee was created to expand Colby's participation in this burgeoning field. This led to curriculum development, exchanges of visiting scholars, special lectures and other intercultural programs, and student exchanges with predominantly African-American institutions. Formerly called Black Studies, the program has maintained a special relationship with other College programs such as the American Studies Program, the Colby College Black History Month Celebration, the Office of Intercultural Affairs, and the Ralph J. Bunche Symposium, which sponsors events that explore the themes of diversity and human rights. Students participating in African-American Studies usually major in English, American studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, Government, or History. The history courses taken within the program may be applied to a field of concentration within the history major. A student with any major may take a variety of courses in African-American Studies. Those who wish may be assigned an adviser in the program as well as one in their major department.

The African American Studies and Research Center is an interdisciplinary program offering an undergraduate major and minor in African American Studies. Courses are taught by African American Studies faculty from several departments throughout Liberal Arts at Purdue. Students may seek a major or a minor in African American Studies, or may take courses as electives. Additionally, students have the option of a double major in African American Studies and another academic area such as Communications, English, History, Psychology, and Sociology. The major in African American Studies focuses on the experience of African Americans and their connections to the African Diaspora in the Caribbean and Latin America. Coursework addresses such topics as cultural practices, with reference to literature, history, and film as well as inequality as it relates to issues of nationality, race, class, and gender. The major provides students with a solid theoretical and research basis to pursue either graduate professional study or employment in business or industry. In addition, our faculty led study-abroad programs allow students global engagement that will benefit them upon graduation. Why should you take our courses?

African-American Studies
Traditionally, African-American Studies has focused on the history of Black people in the United States. However, as reflected in the following sources, African-American Studies is highly interdisciplinary, and seeks to acquaint students with trends, issues, and forces that have shaped the Black experience in America. At the same time, such factors as cultural adaptation, institutional development, and group self-definition are examined, while surveying the contemporary status and condition of African-Americans. Many of the following indexes and abstracts, although they are multidisciplinary in scope, contain a wealth of information germane to African-Americans.
