Welcome to the Department of African and African-American Studies!
Our department will introduce you to African and African-American history, culture and life in general. Although Africa and Afro-America are the major areas of study, due attention is paid to the Caribbean and Latin America. The interdisciplinary major, with its opportunity for fieldwork in Africa or in the African Diaspora, also encourages students to engage in independent study to maximize their academic and research potential. In addition to academic interests, our program will prove useful for professionals whose careers take them to these geographic and cultural areas. Although we do not currently offer advanced degrees (an M A degree has been approved by the College), courses are available to persons working toward an interdisciplinary M.A., Ph.D or other advanced degrees from varied programs. New Entries in Red Adam Abdul Hakeem
Twenty-year-old Adam Abdul Hakeem was the first person in American judicial history to be found innocent by reason of self defense in a police shooting case. This gripping documentary tells the story of Hakeem, (formerly named Larry Davis), who tried to extricate himself from a police-run drug ring in which he had participated for six years. In doing so, it examines the relationships between law enforcement agencies, the criminal justice system, and the African-American community. ( more Adam Clayton Powell
This is a compelling portrait of the legendary African American leader, Adam Clayton Powell, as well as a fascinating look at the beginning of modern black politics in this country. ( more African American Quilting: The Cloth Sings to Me
Quilting is interwoven with the history of black women in America. We meet ebullient women and see their colorful creations, which link them to their past. ( more All Power to The People! The Black Panther Party and Beyond
