Preliminary statements on the Yoruba
The Yoruba as an ethnic and cultural group is one of the most researched ethnic groups in the world. By 1976, the available literature on the Yoruba, despite many omissions, numbered 3,488 items, an unrivalled feat in sub-Saharan Africa. A Yoruba civilization with a set of ideas, values, practices, philosophical thought, beliefs, traditions, institutions, material goods and technologies is well established and never in doubt. Concrete historical realities show that the Yoruba possess a rich civilization that is comparable with other civilizations of the world. The major aspects of this culture are expressed in visible attributes and in sublime values. The material culture is exhibited in commerce, manufacturing technology, arts and crafts and of course music and dance. Yoruba values are best seen in respect for elders and constituted authorities, honesty, integrity, diligence and a profound religious belief system.

Nuthin' but a "G" Thang The Culture and Commerce of Gangsta Rap
Eithne Quinn "Quinn has written an impressive academic study of gangsta rap's music and culture...recommended for music and cultural studies collections in academic or larger public libraries." Library Journal "Quinn's book constitutes an original statement on the contradictory currents that continue to pattern popular American culture. Quinn explores the intricacies of black working-class culture, ideology, and agency with great skill and nuance. Above all, Nuthin' But a "G" Thang shows how gansta rap is not simply a pop culture fad but instead embodies profound shifts in American culture and everyday life." Representing: Hip Hop Culture and the Production of Black Cinema "Eithne Quinn has written the richest, most insightful analysis of gansta rap I've ever read. She takes both a long view of the gangsta genre, locating it within a very old expressive culture, and also places it within contemporary commercial culture and flows of global capital. She shows how the historic pimp and rap artist are collapsed in interesting and contradictory ways, for the genre produces a critique of capitalism and white supremacy alongside a celebration of wealth and name-brand consumer items." Race Rebels: Culture, Politics, and The Black Working Class

CIEE Study Center in Santiago, Dominican Republic : This program is designed for students with two-years of college-level Spanish or the equivalent and an interest in Caribbean area studies.
Curriculum Highlights: The goals of the program are to help students solidify their Spanish language skills and gain an understanding of the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean region, with a particular emphasis on the Hispanic Caribbean. These goals are achieved through intensive language coursework, social science area studies, literature coursework, and homestays. Students with an interest in community service or teaching English as a second language can gain practical experience outside of the classroom. In addition, there are extensive cultural excursions throughout the island, work retreats, and volunteer opportunities.
Setting Description: Santiago de los Caballeros, the second largest city in the Dominican Republic, is surrounded by mountains, and just a 90-minute drive from the Atlantic coast. Known as la Ciudad Coraz—n, Santiago is the commercial and cultural center of the fertile Cibao Valley region. Although it is a growing city with a population exceeding 700,000, Santiago still retains many features of a small town, in particular, friendly people.
