Anglo-American Literature and Comparative Literature
Clientele: Cornell's English Department offers courses about genres (utopias, folklore, detective story) as well as traditional courses about specific authors and chronological periods. The departments of English and Comparative Literature emphasize the history and analysis of critical theory (e.g., feminism, semiotics) as related to popular culture as well as the canon. The collection serves other departments, including Theatre Arts, Linguistics, the Society for the Humanities, Women's Studies, and African Studies and Research. Existing collection ECS 4 Lang W The current collection covers all British, U. S., Australian and Canadian literatures and language, plus basic English-language titles from the Pacific Islands. Historically, Anglo-American literature was collected at a research level with 4+ strength in the Medieval and 18th century portions of the collection. Major exceptions to level 4 coverage have been Celtic language and literature, journalism, and Australian and Canadian literature; some areas of these holdings are at a research level, but overall they support a level 3 (instructional) level. Current collection CCI 4 Lang W Primary texts, bibliographies, and secondary criticismin that orderare all necessary to maintain the collection at a 4 level. Primary texts are mostly in English, but our holdings of secondary works represent all major European languages. As the purchasing power of funding declines, we have bought fewer critical works in foreign languages. However, a special effort is made to acquire all scholarly titles treating themes and motifs in literature, and journals devoted to the works of individual authors . Titles from selected small presses are received on blanket order .

  • You can search by keyword, author, title, subject, and other things, or you can do a “power search,” also known as a Boolean search (AND, OR, BUT NOT).
Author Search Tips
  • When searching for an author, start with the last name. For a book by an author, click the Author button. For a book about the author, click the Subject button. To see if the author is listed somewhere else in a book description, click the Keyword button. In this case you may want to try last name only, or first/middle/last in the proper order. Some authors are not fully cataloged in our library (yet), so you may also want to search for a specific book title. Type in the title , and click the Title button. Subject search terms include: authors, books, literature, English, American, etc.

Perhaps you've read Iyanla Vanzant's "Yesterday, I Cried" or Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun." While very different, both communicate the rich traditions of African-American literature. The creative forces of the African-American experience flooded the artistic world early in the history of the United States.
Traversing all genres, styles and subject matter, the work of African Americans appears both in the mainstream and on the margins. From Toni Morrison to Marcus Garvey and Chinua Achebe to Zora Neale Hurston, African-American authors reach audiences of all ages and ethnicities.

Both inherently and overtly political in content, the Black Arts movement was the only American literary movement to advance "social engagement" as a sine qua non of its aesthetic. The movement broke from the immediate past of protest and petition (civil rights) literature and dashed forward toward an alternative that initially seemed unthinkable and unobtainable: Black Power. In a 1968 essay, "The Black Arts Movement,"

Civil Rights Legacies in African American Literature
In 1964, Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the Civil Rights Act. As the
MLA returns to Washington, D.C. 41 years later, this special session
seeks to commemorate that occasion by examining the legacies of civil
rights in contemporary African American literature. In particular, this session will explore how African American writers have portrayed and/or critiqued the Civil Rights movement and its achievements. How does the Civil Rights movement still define African American political goals today? How does it haunt contemporary writers and thinkers? How might we understand contemporary writers as responding to that movement and its political goals, or perhaps charting new directions for African
