William L. Andrews My first book, The Literary Career of Charles W. Chesnutt (1980), deals with a seminal figure in the development of African American and Southern American prose fiction. To Tell a Free Story is a history of African American autobiography up to 1865, the research for which got me interested in autobiography studies. Since 1988 I've been general editor of a book series, Wisconsin Studies in Autobiography , published by the University of Wisconsin Press. Since the mid-1980's I've done a considerable amount of editing of African American and southern literature and criticism. The climax of this work has been The Norton Anthology of African American Literature The Oxford Companion to African American Literature (1997), and The Literature of the American South: A Norton Anthology (1997), three big collaborative projects that I have co-edited. I'm now series editor of

She was 54 years old. Williams, a native Californian who grew up in the San Joaquin Valley, was best known for her historical novel "Dessa Rose." First published in 1986 by William Morrow & Co., "Dessa Rose" was an instant critical and popular success. The novel is now in its fourth printing and has been translated into German, Dutch, and French. At the time of her death, Williams was working on a sequel to "Dessa Rose" and on another novel set in the 20th century. The story of an enslaved black woman and a white Southern belle, "Dessa Rose" was praised by the New York Times as "artistically brilliant, emotionally affecting and totally unforgettable." Williams told the Los Angeles Times that her research on slavery while writing the novel "brought me to the brink of despair, because I realized how circumscribed our circumstances had been." Williams' prodigious talent won her acclaim in many literary genres. Her first book of poetry, "The Peacock Poems," was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award. She won an Emmy Award for a television performance of poems from her second poetry book, "SomeOne Sweet Angel Chile," another National Book Award nominee. Her full-length, one-woman drama, "Letters from a New England Negro," was a featured play at the National Black Theatre Festival (1991) and the Chicago International Theatre Festival (1992).

    African American Literature
Having its origins in the slave narratives and the folktales transmitted orally during that period, the literature of the African American has been rich and varied. Beginning with the first published work of fiction ( Clotel; Or, the President's Daug hter ) in 1853, continuing under the influence of W.E.B. Du Bois during the first part of this century, and reaching a flowering during the Harlem Renaissance, major contributions have been made to American literature. Today African American writers , such as Toni Morrison, Alex Haley, and Maya Angelou are recognized as among the most significant and popular authors in this country. The following topics are the major divisions in this section dealing with African American literature in general. If you are more interested in a specific genre, go to the bottom of this page. Web site: http://www.uiowa.edu/~afriam African American World Studies focuses on the study of people of the African diaspora, particularly in the United States. African American World Studies is interdisciplinary, drawing cooperating faculty from American studies, anthropology, art, education, English, French, geography, history, political science, Spanish and Portuguese, sociology, and women's studies. Because a thorough understanding of African American and African cultures cannot be achieved through study restricted to the perspective of a single discipline, all students are required to pursue courses in both humanities and social sciences. African American world studies continually expands its perspectives by developing or cross-listing courses that fuse the knowledge drawn from many disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.
