Publisher This landmark anthology includes the work of 120 writers over two centuries, from the earliest known work by an African American, Lucy Terry's poem "Bars Fight, " to the fiction of the Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison and the poems of the U.S. Poet Laureate, Rita Dove. " If Norton anthologies define the canon, then, with the publication of this volume, African American literature is now assured inclusion. . . . With a star lineup of coeditors, each section is introduced and edited by leading scholars who provide thoughtful overviews and analyses. Any anthology fights against space limitation, and although this one omits some significant works by Zora Neale Hurston and includes nothing by Gayl Jones, it fortunately publishes many longer texts in their entiretye.g.

Department of English
College of Arts and Sciences

email: Monica.Brown@nau.edu
tel: 520-523-8743 Course Prerequisite : English 105 Course Description : This course is a survey of African American literature, from the eighteenth-century to the present. In one semester, it would be impossible to adequately explore the richness and complexity of the African American Literary tradition in sufficient depth. For example, we could easily spend a semester on the Slave Narrative, or the Harlem Renaissance, or on a single author such as Toni Morrison. This course, rather, will serve as an introduction to African American literature, and we will consider various authors (storytellers, novelists, poets, dramatist, filmmakers, musicians, and essayists) representing the vernacular tradition, the literature of slavery and freedom, the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement, contemporary literature and independent film. Many wonderful authors will be left out, but students will have the opportunity to explore a particular author or period in more depth in their final papers. See daily schedule This course may be used in the Aesthetic and Humanistic Inquiry distribution block in the Liberal Studies Program. This particular course, because of its focus on African American Literature, has as its thematic focus Valuing the Diversity of Human Experience.

Description
Whether thinking of religion, music, dance, politics, economics, or literature, thinking about American culture as a whole requires thought about African American culture. In this course we will look at African American literature both as a literary tradition in its own right and as a lens through which we can better see African American culture and American culture as a whole. These cultural texts will allow us to see the ways in which African-Americans have contributed to, have been influenced by, have appropriated, and have transformed American notions of freedom, equality, gender, sexuality, religion, and, of course, literature itself.
Course Goals
To introduce you to major works, themes, and concerns of African American literature To introduce you to the relationship African American culture and American culture as a whole.

page: Major Themes Although it is risky to make any sweeping generalizations about this diverse body of literature, it is possible to identify at least four major themes that dominate the works of contemporary black gay male writers: the complex relationship between the individual black gay self and the larger African-American community, the devastating consequences of racism, the pain and the possibilities of interracial love, and the tragedy of AIDS. The relationship between the individual black self and the black communitya frequent theme in African-American literature in generalsurfaces insistently in the works of many contemporary black gay male writers. Since a strong and enabling sense of racial self is necessary to cope with the psychological assaults of white racism, the black gay male protagonist can rarely afford to disconnect himself completely from the black community and seek total assimilation into the predominantly white gay community. Teaching drama can be made particularly effective by emphasizing how, through performance, drama's accessibility to an audience can be politically potent. Relation of drama to audience remains a rich resource in terms of political expression. As a result, the genre, of all types of literature, is perhaps the most directly suited to addressing compelling public as well as private issues of life and has often been used as a device that publicly evokes issues of political change, particularly in the 20th century.1 In African American literature, this political connection with the audience is intensified by the radical nature of black drama as it expresses protest and at the same time embodies acts of communal resistance and reaffirmation for and with the audience.
