Excellent historical atlas provides information on African peoples and cultures from pre-history to the present. Long, informative, and decidedly afrocentric essays accompany each chapter (e.g., the section on twelfth century African presence in Mexico and Central America, presented here as fact), along with many illustrations and maps. An indispensable and provocative resource.

http://www.ibiblio.org/ipa/walker/bio.html
Biography Margaret Abigail Walker was born on 7 July 1915 in Birmingham, Alabama. Her parents, the Reverend Sigismund C. Walker, a Methodist minister and an educator, and Marion Dozier Walker, a music teacher, encouraged her to read poetry and philosophy from an early age. Walker completed her high school education at Gilbert Academy in New Orleans, Louisiana, where her family had moved in 1925. She went on to attend New Orleans University (now Dillard University) for two years. Then, after acclaimed poet Langston Hughes recognized her talent and urged her to seek training in the North, she transferred to Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, where she received a B.A. in English in 1935, at the age of nineteen. In 1937, she published "For My People" in Poetry magazine. Her first poem to appear in print, it became one of her most famous and was even anthologized in 1941 in The Negro Caravan before becoming the opening poem of her first volume of verse in 1942.

Introduction Literary criticism is the evaluation of literary works. Literary criticism can take several forms. A criticism can compare a literary work with other works published during the same period. A criticism can compare one work of an author to other works also by that author. A criticism can compare a theme in the literary work of one author to the literary works of other authors who use the same theme. Most literary criticism is published in scholarly journals that are available primarily in print. Very few scholarly journals on literary criticism exist in electronic form. Online Catalog Subject search option to find books about the author’s work. Type in the author’s name as your subject. You can also type in immediately following the author’s name "criticism and interpretation", "bibliographies", or the title of a specific work.

Zora Neale Hurston
Back to Top Hurston was a prolific writer of fiction, folklore and anthropology. She published her first short story in 1921 in Howard University's student literary magazine and continued writing and publishing until her death in 1960. Her work includes Jonah's Gourd Vine (1934), Mules and Men (1935), Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), Tell My Horse (1938), Moses, Man of the Mountain (1939), Dust Tracks on a Road (1942), Seraph on the Suwanee (1948), I Love Myself: When I Am Laughing . . . and Then Again When I Am Looking Mean and Impressive: A Zora Neale Hurston Reader (1979, The Sanctified Church: The Folklore Writings of Zora Neale Hurston (1981), Spunk: The Selected Stories of Zora Neale Hurston (1985), Mule Bone: A Comedy of Negro Life, with Langston Hughes (1991), and Every Tongue Got To Confess (2001). Interest in Hurston and her work has increased dramatically since the 1970's. Each year new critical and scholarly works about Hurston's writing are published. The Zora Neale Hurston Arts and Humanities Festival is held annually in her hometown of Eatonville, Florida. When she died in 1960, she was buried in an unmarked grave in a segregated cemetery. In 1973, Alice Walker, the poet and novelist, traveled to Hurston's grave and paid homage to her by placing a stone marker which read "ZORA NEALE HURSTON 1901-1960 A GENIUS OF THE SOUTH NOVELIST, FOLKLORIST, ANTHROPOLOGIST". Since then literature scholars have studied her work, her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God has become a college classic, and her work is being edited and republished in definitive editions.

The Wall Street Journal By Sally Satel "As a member of the White group, what responsibility do you hold for the racist, oppressive, and discriminating manner by which you personally and professionally deal with minorities?" asks a popular textbook for psychotherapists, "Counseling the Culturally Different." Welcome to the world of multicultural therapy. The idea behind multicultural therapy, or "cultural competence," as it is sometimes called, is that human identity is primarily culture-dependent. The theory presumes that if therapist and patient are members of different groups, especially racial groups, they will experience miscommunication and mistrust. The therapist must therefore learn a different set of rules for treating patients of each different race. The notion of treating patients according to their racial or ethnic groups has gained increasing acceptance in recent years. Multicultural therapy pops up regularly on the conference-and-workshop circuit and is the subject of a growing list of scholarly books. It is also an increasing part of mental health training: Only a handful of counseling programs required multicultural counseling courses in the 1970s and early 1980s, but recent surveys have found that 42% to 59% of counseling programs currently require such a course. The American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association (which is meeting this week in New York), and the federal government's Public Health Service have all gotten on the multicultural bandwagon, publishing treatment guidelines for racial and ethnic groups.

A Conversation With Lorraine-Johnson Coleman... 1. What is the inspiration for your characters? Is there really an Aunt Maribelle? The characters in the "kinfolks"section of Just Plain Folks are based on family members that I know and love. Naturally, I have changed the names to protect the guilty. Other characters in the book are based on a combination of research, conversations, anecdotes as well as, my own fancy. Although this is definitely a work of fiction, I hope that readers will not only find the characters and experiences realistic, but will be reminded of positive experiences and loved ones of their own. 2. Does Farmville, North Carolina really exist? It most certainly does, 77 miles E-SE of Raleigh on Highway 264. It is also 12 miles west of Greenville, North Carolina where East Carolina University is located. Strangely enough, I discovered during the course of my work in heritage preservation, that there is a Farmville, Virginia only a 3-1/2 hour drive away. You know, there may be a lot more "Farmvilles" around than we thought. 3. What is the purpose of your afterthoughts?
