The first is an African American Literature TimelineI split my students into major literary movements in African American Literature (as divided by the Norton Anthology of African American Literature.) Within each movement I assign a specific author to each student. Each student must research his/her author, including both the author's bio and examples of the author's work (mainly focusing on short stories and poetry). Each student writes a paper on his/her author; the paper incorporates biographical information and an analysis of the works referenced. Then, as a movement (there are usually 3 students per movement), the students present their information to the rest of the class. Using their visuals, the class constructs an actual timeline around the classroom. All work is done outside of class, except of course for the presentations.
