14 - 15 May 2003
Geneva, Switzerland I. Synopsis
The Need to Position Trade Facilitation in Africa in a Broader Framework of Development Challenges that Confront the Continent The Need to acknowledge the Problems of Trade Facilitation on the African Continent The Need for Pragmatic Solutions to Trade Facilitation Problems of African Countries The Need to Acknowledge the Capacity Constraints Faced By African Countries and the Digital Divide The Importance of Accepting the Additional Resource and Capacity Burdens That Would Arise for African Countries in the Implementation of a Multilateral Framework on Trade Facilitation II. Trade Facilitation, Economic Growth and Trade Expansion Many of the presentations made at this Forum have tried to show the benefits and costs that may arise from intensified efforts at trade facilitation and from the adoption of multilateral rules that could govern "trade facilitation". Indeed, many acknowledge, including us in Africa, that trade facilitation can contribute significantly to reducing "transactions costs" in both domestic and international trade.

Overview
Barbara Best Alan Bornbusch Coral reefs around the world are in crisis. Over 25% have already died or are severely damaged, and another 30% are seriously threatened and may die from global warming, overfishing, destructive fishing practices, and unsound coastal development. Contributing to the problem, many coral reef animals and products are collected globally for commercial purposes, including food fish, the marine aquarium trade, live food fish markets, curios and knick-knacks, jewelry, and traditional medicines. Global trade is leading to overexploitation of reef animals and the use of fishing practices that destroy the reefs. Recent surveys of reefs worldwide found that many species of high commercial value were absent or present in very low numbers, in almost all the reefs surveyed. Results suggest that almost all coral reefs have been affected by overfishing, and that there may be no pristine reefs left in the world.

Ms Nkamba-Van Wyk set up the Talking Beads Academy in 1997, with the aim of keeping local traditions alive and providing employment for South African women. Women from rural areas, working in ...

Poor communities have the worst access to a range of public services, according to 10 new studies published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) in the UK. The report maps evidence for the so-called "inverse care law", under which those in greatest need have the worst services. Water does not behave by market rules! Writing in the London Financial Times (1/9/05), Hans Engelberts, General Secretary of PSI, explained that delivery of water to the world's poor is best done by public providers because water does not behave by normal market rules.
