AFRICA AND CANADA STRENGTHEN TRADE RELATIONS
Minister for International Trade Pierre Pettigrew today concluded Canada's trade mission to South Africa, Nigeria and Senegal. The mission marked an important step in the development of trade relations between Canada and Africa. "Our mission has demonstrated our commitment to the New Partnership for Africa's Development and to Africa itself," said Minister Pettigrew. "As our trade relations develop, a growing number of companies will appreciate the exceptional opportunities that stronger ties with Africa can produce." In all, more than a hundred representatives of Canadian companies and government organizations joined Minister Pettigrew as part of the delegation, attesting to Canada's keen interest in developing closer economic ties with Africa. During the mission, participating Canadian businesses concluded 24 agreements, totalling more than $150 million, including 6 contracts worth $76 million and 18 memorandums of understanding and letters of intent worth $90 million. In South Africa, Minister Pettigrew was present at the signing of an agreement between Export Development Canada and the Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa Limited. The agreement aims to increase cooperation between Canada and South Africa in the financing of projects conducted jointly in third markets.

Expanding Africa’s Role in World Trade By Robert J. Evans International Trade Forum - Issue 1/2005 This workshop gathered officials from trade ministries, TPOs, associations for textiles, agro-products and services, and a young entrepreneurs’ group. Photo: ITC How can African countries build the expertise to promote their interests more effectively in trade talks and derive gains from the trading system? The three Geneva-based trade development organizations — ITC, UNCTAD and WTO — are working together to boost countries’ abilities to play a more active role. When African trade ministers met in Tunis in October 1994, they had a problem on their collective minds. Just six months earlier, most had joined over 100 colleagues from around the globe in Marrakech to sign the Final Act of the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).

Africa's Export Success Stories Español Français International Trade Forum - Issue 1/2001 While Africa faces tremendous challenges on the road to integration into the world trading system, there is more to Africa’s trade performance than meets the eye. Many African export sectors have outperformed world market growth. Champions in the African export portfolio include cut flowers, frozen fish, t-shirts, women’s trousers, footwear and transistors. These cases illustrate that Africa can compete. These are among the findings of the International Trade Centre’s new Trade Performance Index, launched in Bangkok at UNCTAD X. The Trade Performance Index ranks the export performance of 184 countries in 14 export sectors, placing export sectors in all countries on a global competitiveness ladder. The Trade Performance Index is based on 1998 export performance, as well as shifts in export performance between 1994 and 1998.

In Business Today
Sun, 18 Sep 2005 First bricks laid for the Absa International Trade Bureau at Johannesburg International Airport - ACSA ACSA The wait for Africa’s first airport-based International Trade Bureau is finally over.
The plans are complete, the bulk of the exhibitors are secured and construction has commenced on the multi-million rand project that is going to introduce an exciting new component to Africa’s biggest and busiest airport.
Construction of the bureau is scheduled to be completed around February 2006 and will offer South African exporters unparalleled access to international business visitors and thereby international markets.
This initiative was launched in February last year when the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA), the National African Federated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Nafcoc) Gauteng and the International Trade Bureau (ITB) announced their partnership in developing this world-class international trade bureau.
Soon thereafter, banking partner Absa announced the signing of a R5,4 million sponsorship of the Johannesburg International Trade Bureau. The crown jewel of this lucrative deal was the bank’s acquisition of the naming rights for the facility and the centre henceforth became known as the Absa International Trade Bureau (AITB).
