Putting consumers at the heart of trade
15 September: Event... Consumers International (CI) will be hosting an open event in Geneva, 20-21 September 2005, to publicise our latest programme and campaign work. At a time when the issue of trade never seems to be far from the headlines, Consumers International (CI) is bringing together experts from around the world to stress the case for putting the consumer at the heart of trade negotiations. The event kicks off a season of campaigning for CI, ahead of December's WTO Ministerial in Hong Kong.
    CI at the United Nations
Consumers International is contributing to the United Nations debate on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the elimination of global poverty. The consumer movement wants to see a more just and equitable society and calls for faster progress in the attainment of the MDGs, and a greater emphasis on pro-consumer policies in trade, debt relief, development assistance, agriculture and the environment.

Nairobi - From 26 through 30 November 2001, 125 leaders of government, the business community and the public sector from nine countries in Eastern and Southern Africa will meet here to discuss and find practical ways of increasing their export trade. Jointly sponsored by the International Trade Centre (ITC), a Geneva-based agency affiliated to the United Nations (UN) and the World Trade Organization, and the Kenyan Ministry of Trade and Industry, the "Trade Week" will be divided into three partially overlapping events. First comes a Regional Executive Forum (REF) whose task is to agree on concrete action plans for national export strategies during the first three days. "The principal objectives of the Forum are to strengthen private-public partnerships in defining and managing national export strategies, and to provide best-practice guidelines for becoming globally more competitive," says Brian Barclay, Forum Coordinator. Each of the nine countries (Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe) will be represented at the REF by a senior government strategy-maker responsible for export performance, a leading representative of the business community and an expert concerned with the development of e-trade competency at the national level.

South Africa fails to make use of international trade agreement in threatened abalone fishery
Abalone H. midae front view of whole animal - eyes visible
Cape Town, South Africa, 9 September 2003... Attempts to stem the illegal trade in South Africa's endemic abalone species could benefit by regulating international trade in the species in terms of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), according to TRAFFIC*, the wildlife trade monitoring network and WWF South Africa.
'While TRAFFIC and WWF South Africa support all attempts to address the illegal harvesting of abalone, it is disappointing that the South African government has so far failed to make use of consumer state controls, such as those offered by CITES,' said Markus Burgener, Programme Officer with TRAFFIC East/Southern Africa in response to the draft policy on the allocation of abalone fishing rights released on Monday 18 August by the Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Mohammed Valli Moosa.
