Mary L. Dudziak, Cold War Civil Rights: Race and the Image of American Democracy, Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2000. Pp. xii + 330. $29.95 (ISBN 0-691-01661-5). Much of the richest recent scholarship on the Civil Rights Movement can be found in local studies such as Charles Payne's I've Got the Light of Freedom: The Organizing Tradition and the Mississippi Freedom Struggle. However, another burgeoning field that promises to reshape historical scholarship takes us in another direction, toward an international perspective on the movement. Cold War Civil Rights: Race and the Image of American Democracy is the first comprehensive analysis of how Cold War foreign relations in fluenced U.S. civil rights policy from World War II until the mid-sixties. Seeking not to replace local and national studies of the Civil Rights Movement nor to privilege a top-down focus on government elites, Dudziak asks us to expand our horizons. The book's title, without punctuation between Cold War and Civil Rights, also challenges approaches to postwar history that assign these subjects to separate chapters, as many textbooks do. By considering the Cold War and the Civil Rights Movement together, Dudziak argues that race was a national security issue, central to ideological con

Just 45 days after the September 11, 2001, attacks, President Bush rammed the "PATRIOT Act" through Congress with virtually no debate. This law poses an unprecedented threat to Americans' individual freedoms and is a violation of our civil liberties. Many provisions of the act had been long sought after by law enforcement and repeatedly rejected by Congress in the past. Without a warrant or probable cause, the FBI can now search your private medical records or access your library records. Your doctor or local library is forbidden from notifying you when these searches take place. The government may search your home while you are away and in some cases even confiscate your property. Judicial oversight of these measures is virtually nonexistent. These are only a few of the PATRIOT Act's provisions that compromise our civil liberties. I believe that the only way to stop these unconstitutional infringements on basic American freedoms is to revoke the exorbitant powers the PATRIOT Act has granted the government. I voted against the PATRIOT Act. This bill must be repealed.

    John Kennedy and Civil Rights
John F Kennedy is not automatically associated with civil rights issues as Kennedy's presidency is more famed for the Cuban Missile Crisis and issues surrounding the Cold War . Also, no obvious civil rights legislation was signed by Kennedy. However, Kennedy did have a major input into civil rights history - though posthumously.
JFK with Lyndon Johnson John Kennedy came from a rich and privileged Irish-American family. Even so, the family had to leave Boston, the city they are most famously associated with, and moved to New York. In Boston, the family had been held at arms length by those rich families who saw their Irish background as vulgar and the family’s wealth as lacking ‘class’. The Kennedy’s hoped that the more cosmopolitan New York would allow them to access high society. This introduction to bigotry and discrimination should have given Kennedy some kind of empathetic understanding of what life was like for African Americans. However, the opposite would appear to be true. Kennedy put political realism before any form of beliefs when he voted against Eisenhower’s 1957 Civil Rights Act . The route from bill to act nearly served to tear apart the Republicans and the Democrats were almost united to a politician in their opposition to the bill/act. Kennedy had aspirations to be the Democrats next presidential candidate in the 1960 election. If he was seen to be taking the party line and demonstrating strong leadership with regards to opposing the bill, this would do his chances no harm whatsoever. This proved to be the case and Kennedy lead the Democrats to victory over Richard Nixon in 1960.

In 1958, an African-American handyman named Jimmy Wilson was sentenced to die in Alabama for stealing two dollars. Shocking as this sentence was, it was overturned only after intense international attention and the interference of anembarrassed John Foster Dulles. Soon after the United States' segregated military defeated a racist regime in World War II, American racism was a major concern of U.S. allies, a chief Soviet propaganda theme, and an obstacle to AmericanCold War goals throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Each lynching harmed foreign relations, and "the Negro problem" became a central issue in every administration from Truman to Johnson. In what may be the best analysis of howinternational relations affected any domestic issue, Mary Dudziak interprets postwar civil rights as a Cold War feature. She argues that the Cold War helped facilitate key social reforms, including desegregation. Civil rights activistsgained tremendous advantage as the government sought to polish its international image. But improving the nation's reputation did not always require real change. This focus on image rather than substancecombined with constraints onMcCarthy-era political activism and the triumph of law-and-order rhetoriclimited the nature and extent of progress.

This study of Cold War politics looks at the ways that America's race issue was viewed from abroad and considers whether the public relations disaster of segregation motivated federal authorites to influence change. Book Review:

New York, August 29, 2005 —The Justice Initiative and INTERIGHTS today called on Angola to comply with its international human rights obligations, following the expiry of a UN-imposed deadline on the southern African country to act to protect freedom of expression. The open letter to Angolan President Jos© Eduardo dos Santos followed a March 2005 decision of the UN Human Rights Committee that Angola had violated journalist Rafael Marques de Morais' freedom of expression, by jailing him in 1999 for writing articles critical of dos Santos. The Committee gave the Angolan authorities 90 days to compensate Marques and take steps to prevent similar violations in future. No such steps have been taken to date. Read on

    By Al Swanson
    UPI Urban Affairs Correspondent
Despite great progress over the past 40 years the wealth gap between U.S. whites and African-Americans is widening, with unemployment and low wages a major factor, the National Urban League said in its 2005 report on The State of Black America. While middle-class African-American households narrowed income and education gaps significantly, for many the gains were tenuous and are threatened by racial discrimination in housing and other wealth-building areas. The median net worth of an African-American family was $6,100 compared to $67,000 for a white family, and the black homeownership rate was 50 percent compared to 70 percent for whites, the report said. The civil-rights issue of the 21st century may be economic as blacks and other minorities try to secure and expand net worth currently about one-tenth the net worth of U.S. white households. "What is significant is the growing jobs gap between black Americans and white Americans. The fact that the slow recovery in the economy still has not had a positive effect on black America in so far a jobs are concerned," National Urban League President and Chief Executive Officer Marc H. Morial told National Public Radio's News and Notes. "The second interesting discovery from the report is that African-Americans lost a great deal of their investments, or the value of their investments, in the stock market and in mutual funds in the post-9/11 stock market decline. Therefore the wealth gap got exacerbated."

Echoing the sentiment of The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, our tour begins through the multimedia galleries and exhibitions that trace the impassioned sojourn of resolute individuals who, during the 1950’s and 1960’s, challenged bigotry and racial hatred in the struggle for equal rights, with Birmingham, Alabama a city critical in the movement. Much more than a museum, the Institute, which opened on November 15, 1992, is a "learning place with a very strong educational forum," said Florence Wilson-Davis, public relations manager for BCRI. Introduction Transparency International South Africa (TISA) was launched in 1997 as an autonomous South African NGO, solely committed to address the issues of corruption, governance and ethics. TISA is developing extensive networks with different organisations and institutions in the public sector, the private sector and in particular in civil society in South Africa.
TISA is also one of the approximately 115 Chapters affiliated to the international anti-corruption organisation, Transparency International (TI). In addition we are developing networks with other international anti-corruption initiatives and in particular with civil society organisations in the South. The media in South Africa have been giving the Corruption Perception Index much media coverage, typical in such coverage is the use of cartoons as Business Day chose to report the matter.
