PALESTINIAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE APPROVES WORK PROGRAMME
    FOR INTERNATIONAL CIVIL SOCIETY CONFERENCE
Meeting Scheduled for Headquarters on 23 and 24 September
The Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People this morning approved the work programme of the United Nations International Conference of Civil Society in Support of the Palestinian People, scheduled for New York on 23 and 24 September 2002. In further action, it approved the applications of 41 civil society organizations active in support of Palestinian rights all over the world for accreditation to the Committee. Reports by Chairman PAPA LOUIS FALL ( Senegal He said the ensuing panel presentations and discussions helped to identify more clearly the destructive impact of the ongoing Israeli offensive on the Palestinian people and the Palestinian Authority, to appreciate the challenges at hand and, in that light, to evaluate current efforts at peacemaking.  The participants strongly reaffirmed the solidarity of the governments and peoples of Africa with the plight of the Palestinian people, their support for the resumption of political negotiations leading to a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the Palestine question and the realization of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.

was the most important figure Alabama Civil Rights Movement. In the 1950s, he was pastor of Bethel Baptist Church located some distance from downtown. In response to Alabama outlawing the NAACP within the state, he sidetracked the law by forming the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR), which gave the Civil Rights Movement a legal foundation in Alabama. Shortly after the Montgomery Bus Boycott ended successfully in 1957, Rev. Shuttlesworth invited Rev. Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. to Birmingham to become the "Voice of the Civil Rights Movement." Reverends Fred Shuttlesworth, Martin Luther King, Jr., AD King (Martin’s brother), Ralph D Abernathy, Wyatt T Walker, Andrew Young and others forged Project C for "Confrontation" at meetings held in their churches and AG Gaston Motel. By 1960 Birmingham became Ground Zero for Confrontation in the Civil Rights Movement when a plummeting steel market and job loss played right into the hands of evildoers. The KKK galvanized poor Whites against African Americans and Jewish Americans, while Birmingham’s other citizens stood by as churches and homes in the Black and Jewish communities were bombed. Birmingham had so many church bombings from 1957-1964 that it had a well-earned nickname, "Bombingham" Definitely not the marketing slogan you want for a city.

The USA could not risk so many African, South American and Asian countries unshackling from Colonialism in the 1960s, only to choose Communism over Democracy as their new form of government. Democratic countries were too important to America in terms of international trade and natural resources. So American diplomats desperately sought sympathetic ears within the United Nations when they pushed themes concerning the "Merits of Democracy" and "Land of the Free." But whenever US diplomats made those hypocritical statements in the UN General Assembly, the Soviet Union countered in stark rebuttal by referring to pictures from Birmingham news events. With so many news reports and Black leaders calling out the racial crisis in America, even European leaders, to protect their foreign interests, began putting pressure on American diplomats. Each day America, or specifically, President John F Kennedy, allowed such "cuts-deep-because-its-true" criticism without taking action only played into the Soviet Union's hand to attract nations to Communism. JFK also had plenty of geo-political motivation from the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 , which amply demonstrated that third world countries can rapidly become staging grounds for the Cold War to escalate into a Hot War.

Ralph Bunche: Civil and Human Rights
Instructor's Notes by Dr. Charles P. Henry,
Professor and Chair, Department of African American Studies, UC Berkeley

Why is Bunche an important historical figure?
    • Discuss the status of race relations in the U.S. in 1950 when Bunche wins the Nobel Peace Prize, Truman has begun the integration of the Armed Services and Jackie Robinson has integrated baseball. However, much of America remains segregated. Discuss the status of international relations in 1950 as the "Cold War" heats up and as Bunche's fame is used as a weapon in the battle for the allegiance of one billion emerging colonial subjects.
John H. Johnson states that Bunche is the first crossover in a field other than entertainment. What does he mean? How is this term used today to describe people like Tiger Woods and Colin Powell?
    • Discuss the issues of racial stereotyping and racial profiling. How was Bunche stereotyped? Note that he won an athletic scholarship to UCLA even though he was class valedictorian in high school and that his high school principal did not view Ralph as a Negro.

Memphis, Tennessee "I was very moved by what I saw here, even though I knew the basic story of the American civil rights movement," said David Sam of Norway. "I knew little about the details of that struggle," said Rosanna Wong from Hong Kong. They were talking about the National Civil Rights Museum located on the site of the former Lorraine Motel where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot and killed on April 4, 1968. The museum not only honors King's memory, it houses a comprehensive overview of the U.S. civil rights movement. The international visitors were in Oxford, Mississippi to attend a conference on "International Perspectives on Race, Ethnicity and Intercultural Relations," held April 18-22 at the University of Mississippi. While there, however, they took time out to visit the museum located about 70 miles north of Oxford in Memphis, Tennessee. The main exhibits are vignettes capturing pivotal moments in the struggle of African Americans for equal rights in the United States, including the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision that outlawed school segregation, the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott that led to the ending of segregation in public transport, and the 1963 March on Washington at which King gave his electrifying "I Have A Dream" speech." Exhibits recreating the freedom rides, student sit-ins and other nonviolent tactics that were the hallmark of the Movement also are featured prominently at the museum. There also is a component highlighting the failed attempts immediately after the American Civil War (1861-65) to end discrimination. Many of the international visitors did not know, for example, that three civil rights acts were passed in the 10 years after the Civil War ended, but were circumvented in the South. Not until 1964 was a Civil Rights Act passed that was effective.

Women's and girls' exposure is theme of World AIDS Day

Washington A global census of people living with HIV/AIDS finds that more than 37 million carry the virus. About half are female, but in some regions women and girls surpass men in the ranks of the infected. In sub-Saharan Africa, close to 60 percent of adults living with HIV are women. The younger the women, the worse it gets. Among people aged 15-24 who are living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, 76 percent are female. In the United States, AIDS now ranks among the top causes of death for African-American women aged 35-44, according to AIDS Epidemic Update 2004, compiled by the Joint U. N. Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and released November 23. Statistics like these help explain why recognition of World AIDS Day in 2004 on December 1 is devoted to the theme of women, girls, HIV and AIDS. "Women are so victimized because they are so economically dependent on men that their ability to say no sexually, or even to seek protection for themselves sexually, often does not exist," observes Jessie Milan, an AIDS program administrator with a Washington-based company. He has also traveled widely, participating in HIV/AIDS education and awareness programs sponsored by the U.S. State Department's International Information Programs (IIP).
