The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency wanted a product that would enable analysts at the Office of Transnational Issues to better understand the distribution of HIV cases across Africa. Most representations of HIV prevalence in Africa were done based on national infection rates. Such analysis highlights countries that are suffering greatest in proportion to their own populations but does not clearly indicate actual numbers of infected people because population density is not considered. This map product calculates HIV prevalence for all of Africa using U.S. Census Bureau and Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS data. It multiplies the interpolated figure by the number of people listed in the LandScan 2000 distributed population database, modified for each country's target population cohort. The result is a grid of one-square-kilometer cells that represents the HIV-positive population while accounting for the dynamics of population density and complex HIV prevalence distribution.

The primary feature of AidsinAfrica.net is the web documentary entitled "5 Heroes of AIDS in Africa," by Neil Halloran. While other features of this site deal with numbers and the often grim aspects of AIDS in Africa, the documentary looks at positive changes made by heroic individuals. It explores the lives of 5 people living in Africa who are working to bring health to their people in the midst of HIV/AIDS. The web version of the documentary is free, but requires a high bandwidth internet connection. A DVD and videocassette version will also be available for $25, two-thirds of which will go to the organizations featured in the documentary. AidsinAfrica.net is an online resource for current information on HIV/AIDS in Africa. This website uses visual models, such as animated maps and diagrams, to make the the statistics behind HIV/AIDS in Africa more engaging and easy to understand. AidsinAfrica.net is also home of the in-progress documentary "5 Heroes of AIDS in Africa." Epidemic Map
An interactive map that displays the most current levels of HIV prevalence by country in Africa. It also allows you to watch an animation showing HIV spread across the continent using real figures since 1970.

As a first attempt to harmonize formats in order to promote data exchange and use, GEO DEPOT has compiled an initial data set that covers the countries of the Horn of Africa. In order to provide the same sets of data for all the countries of the Horn of Africa we posted DCW derived data sets originated at a scale of 1:1,000,000. We hope to be able to improve them as soon as possible. Files can be downloaded directly from this site. Larger files that have not been posted can be requested from the GEO DEPOT secretariat. All the files are in geographic projection, wgs84 datum.

    http://www.pbs.org/wnet/wideangle/shows/dying/handbook3.html
Research for this piece was conducted during the summer of 2003.
Portraying the world's countless human smuggling routes would require a map lost in a web of arrows. While the maps below are far from a complete catalog of trafficking routes, they denote some of the major regional trends in human trafficking.
Important gateways into Western Europe are the Strait of Gibraltar, where North Africans cross into Spain especially during the summertime, and the Adriatic Sea, where migrants, often women and girls, are trafficked from Albania to Italy. By land, migrants from Eastern Europe and Asia follow the Balkan route from former Soviet republics and satellite states through Greece. Illegal immigrants from North Africa also travel across the Mediterranean to Sicily. Many arrive in Britain by smuggling themselves from northern France across the English Channel to the port of Dover. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, young women from Russia, Estonia, and Latvia are trafficked to Finland, where prostitution is legal, to work in the sex trade. Russian women are also trafficked to Norway and Sweden, where prostitution is also legal.
According to Interpol, most human cargo is being smuggled into the United States by plane. Increasingly, victims travel first to South Africa, where fraudulent documents may be obtained. Interpol also suggests that seafaring ships usually approach America via the Pacific Ocean, where Canada has also intercepted a number of cargo vessels carrying illegal Chinese immigrants trying to enter through the Vancouver area. But recently, use of this method has declined. Instead, many trafficking victims are arriving in Central or South America to enter the U.S. via Mexico.

    OGALLALA AQUIFER
Ninety-five percent of the United States' fresh water is underground. As farmers in the Texan High Plains pump groundwater faster than rain replenishes it, the water tables are dropping. North America's largest aquifer, the Ogallala, is being depleted at a rate of 12 billion cubic metres (bcm) a year. Total depletion to date amounts to some 325 bcm, a volume equal to the annual flow of 18 Colorado Rivers. The Ogallala stretches from Texas to South Dakota, and waters one fifth of US irrigated land. Many farmers in the High Plains are now turning away from irrigated agriculture, as they become aware of the hazards of overpumping, and realise water is not in endless supply. Back to top
    MEXICO CITY
Mexico city is sinking because of the amount of water being pumped out from beneath its foundations. One of the largest and most populous cities in the world, it was once a lush land of lakes. But over the last 500 years the lakes have been drained and the surrounding forests chopped down. As the city grew in size, the water problem magnified. With no adequate drainage system, today rainwater mixes with sewage and is used for irrigation. The city is now at serious risk of running out of clean water. An estimated 40% of the city's water is lost through leaky pipes built at the turn of the century.
