Headlines 18th September 2005 Gambia on World Stage
By Lamin Cham – Daily Observer For the first time in history, the Gambian national anthem will be sung on the world stage, as television pictures carry the faces of our boys and the lyrics of our anthem to millions of viewers across the world. The venue is the municipal stadium of Piura, in South East Peru where the country's footballers take on world champions Brazil in a Group D action in the Fifa U-17 world championship.
The Gambian team, which was the first team to arrive for the tournament, is upbeat about taking the world by storm, and if their preparations are anything to go by, they have every reason to hope for a world conquering feat. A successful string of test matches in England recorded three wins, before two honourable draws in America` and Peru which makes the 2-1 lost in Costa Rica a forgivable slip.
The Gambia is also appearing as the champion of Africa, having won the continental cup on home soil back in May. On that occasion, the Baby Scorpions rummaged through the tourney in top form brushing aside top teams like Ghana and South Africa.
