The Department of Geography's Home Page Go to the General Information Page (Recommended after reading the following Preamble). Preamble: The University of Port Elizabeth is a relatively small institution with approximately 5000 students. Of these approximately 250 are enrolled for courses in the Department of Geography, in which the medium of instruction is English. The Department offers courses in the Arts, Science, Economic Sciences, Health Sciences and education faculties, at undergraduate level, and in the Arts and Economic Sciences faculties at postgraduate level (Go to the Course Page . In general, Geography classes are small, making staff-student contact more direct than is possible in many larger institutions. Consequently, through personal contact and discussion it is possible to overcome many problems in their initial stages. The city of Port Elizabeth and the Eastern Cape provide a varied and interesting environment for geographical teaching and research in both the physical and human sectors. Thus fieldwork in the immediate urban environment and further afield plays an important part in the Geography programme. Although the University of Port Elizabeth is only 30 years old it has the facilities offered by many older institutions and in some respects has more complete collections, notably in the library. The Department has its own computer terminals and access to the facilities of the University Computing Centre and the Geographical Information Systems laboratory

Comments or suggestions, please send them to: webmaster@moac.morgan.edu THE DEPARTMENTAL PHILOSOPHY History is the effort to reconstruct the past and to discover what people thought and did. The study of history enables the student to understand the past and the present and to prepare for the future. It provides insight into the experiences of the diverse peoples of the world as well as an understanding of the process of recording, narrating, and interpreting these events by historians. In addition to historical knowledge, the department teaches students to read with understanding, to analyze and interpret ideas, and to write clear and meaningful reports. The history major provides excellent preparation for a variety of careers. The skills, and knowledge gained through historical research are good preparations for careers in law; teaching, both at the pre-collegiate and collegiate levels; theology; library science; and archival management and museum work; as well as in politics and government, in banking, business and industry, and in administration.

89. South Africa Geography
geography. South africa occupies the southern tip of the african but, ingeneral, the northern border region of South africa is sparsely populated.
http://www.country-studies.com/south-africa/geography.html
Geography
South Africa forms a distinct region, or subcontinent, divided from the rest of Africa by the rivers that mark its northern border. In the northwest, the Orange River cuts through the Namib Desert and divides South Africa from Namibia. In the east, the Limpopo River traverses large areas of arid grassland along the common border with Zimbabwe and southeastern Botswana. Between these two, the Molopo River winds through the southern basin of the Kalahari Desert, also dividing South Africa from Botswana. Populations have moved across these rivers almost continuously over the centuries, but, in general, the northern border region of South Africa is sparsely populated. The geological substratum of the subcontinent was formed at least 3.8 billion years ago, according to geologists, and most of the country's natural features evolved into their present form more than 200 million years ago. Especially since the early twentieth-century writings of Alfred Wegener, geologists have hypothesized that South Africa was once part of a large land mass, now known as Gondwana, or Gondwanaland, that slowly fractured along the African coastline millions of years ago. Theories of such a supercontinent are bolstered by geological continuities and mineral similarities between South Africa and South America, by fossil similarities between South Africa and the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar, and by the sharp escarpments, or geological fractures, that encircle most of southern Africa near the coast.

In March 1961. my wife, children (Steve, Ann and Chris) and I, departed, by car, from Forbes Air Force Base headed for our overseas departure point, Maguire Air Force Base, NJ. We planned our route for an overnight stop at Niagara Falls. Viewing the magnificent Falls was quite an experience for all of us. Another of God's wonders of the world. On arrival at Maguire, Sweetie Pie, our doggie, departed by air freight from New York for Madrid and was only 7 hours in enroute. We departed Maguire for Torrejon Air Base, Spain (Madrid) in a lumbering Military Air Transport DC-6. It was a long and gruesome flight, especially after becoming used to the speed of travel of the RB-47. We were billeted in the Hotel Del Cornado. The restaurant at the Del Cornado had a 5 Star rating in the guidebooks. Staying at the hotel also gave us the opportunity to find other restaurants and to explore our new surroundings. We made our temporary home in this hotel for 3 months trying to obtain living quarters off base. There were no quarters available at Torrejon AB. Finally a 5 bedroom, walled in yard and house, with a swimming pool, a small space for a garden to raise vegetables, and a closed door garage turned up. It was a real plus. It cost $125 per month and was only about 6 miles from Torrejon. Some time later, I was scheduled to take General Wade to Offutt AFB for his "Looking Glass" tour. On our departure from Torrejon, unknown to us, there was a flock of ducks at the far end of the runway. The runway was 12,500' long and it had just rained hard. It was impossible to see the ducks as we released the brakes and began our takeoff roll. The ducks apparently thought the wet runway was a lake. On liftoff, the ducks and our aircraft took to the air at the same time. The windshield was suddenly blacked out
