GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE COLLECTION
Geography is a rich, diverse, and interdisciplinary field which has expanded beyond the traditional divisions of physical geography and human geography. While the scope of this collection is shaped by Library of Congress call number ranges, other collections with similar interests geology, engineering, and economics, to name a few supplement and enhance the Geography collection. The ultimate goal in our combined efforts is to fully support the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, the research needs of faculty across disciplines, and the general research needs of the university community. Toward this end, particular attention is given to acquiring monographs and periodicals which reflect the latest developments in the field. The Department of Geography coursework emphasizes traditional geographic theory, quantitative techniques, and environmental and policy studies. Four subfields within the discipline are given particular emphasis: energy-environmental systems and resource analysis; geography of development; remote sensing and geographic information systems; and biogeography and climatology. The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and the Graduate School (GRS) offers BA, MA, and PhD degrees in Geography. Interdisciplinary degree programs are available at Boston University through department faculty participation in the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies, the African Studies Center, and the Center for Remote Sensing.

General Education Appendix
Applies only to General Catalog years 1988-89 through 1998-99
The following is the General Education program for students enrolled under 1998-1999 or earlier catalogs. (See the appropriate catalog for greater detail.)
The 1998-1999 General Education Program requires students to complete a minimum of 51 semester units. This includes 18 units minimum in CORE, 27 units minimum in BREADTH, and 9 upper-division units minimum, of which 6 units are in CAPSTONE. The 9 upper-division units can be taken no sooner than the term in which 60 units of coursework are completed. Also, 9 units must be taken in residence at California State University, Fresno. Because the goal of General Education is to provide a solid foundation with a broad scope and the goal of the major is to provide depth in a specific discipline or program, the following stipulations apply:
  • A CORE course also may be applied to a student's major requirement unless the department specifically prohibits it.
  • A maximum of two General Education courses from one department or program may be applied to satisfy BREADTH requirements. (However, a department or program may prohibit any General BREADTH Education course from simultaneously satisfying its own departmental or programmatic requirements.)

    Geography
Zimbabwe covers an area of 390,759 square kilometres, which are three times the size of England and approximately the size of California. A high plateau dominates the country with a ridge forming a central backbone and watershed with rivers running northwest to the Zambezi and southeast to the Limpopo and Save Rivers. The granite bedrock rises in the eastern part of the country to form the Eastern Highlands, which comprise the Bvumba and Chimanimani Mountains. The northern end of the ridge is the most fertile area of the country and forms an escarpment towards the Zambezi valley. On the northern border with Zambia the man-made Lake Kariba with its surrounding game parks, has become a tourist destination whilst to the west lie the world famous Victoria Falls.
