    South Africa - GEOGRAPHY
    South Africa - Geography
South Africa South Africa forms a distinct region, or subcontinent, divided from the rest of Africa by the rivers that mark its northern border. In the northwest, the Orange River cuts through the Namib Desert and divides South Africa from Namibia. In the east, the Limpopo River traverses large areas of arid grassland along the common border with Zimbabwe and southeastern Botswana. Between these two, the Molopo River winds through the southern basin of the Kalahari Desert, also dividing South Africa from Botswana. Populations have moved across these rivers almost continuously over the centuries, but, in general, the northern border region of South Africa is sparsely populated. The geological substratum of the subcontinent was formed at least 3.8 billion years ago, according to geologists, and most of the country's natural features evolved into their present form more than 200 million years ago. Especially since the early twentieth-century writings of Alfred Wegener, geologists have hypothesized that South Africa was once part of a large land mass, now known as Gondwana, or Gondwanaland, that slowly fractured along the African coastline millions of years ago. Theories of such a supercontinent are bolstered by geological continuities and mineral similarities between South Africa and South America, by fossil similarities between South Africa and the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar, and by the sharp escarpments, or geological fractures, that encircle most of southern Africa near the coast.

The Atlas of African Affairs is divided into five sections dealing with environmental, historical, political and economic issues and with Southern Africa. Throughout, the book presents an interdisciplinary, integrated perspective on African affairs. Most of the chapters deal with continent-wide themes and are illustrated by maps of Africa as a whole drawn to a standardised outline of the same map projection and scale. Other chapters, often by way of example, discuss parts of the continent or individual countries and are illustrated with appropriate maps. The basic format of integrated text and maps is supplemented by guides to further reading at the end of each section as well as a series of detailed statistical tables at the end of the book. General Information Summer Program Summer Session 1 Summer Session 2 ... Summer Faculty Physical Geography Experience in Africa While Academic Travel has been a long-standing tradition at Franklin, this is the first time summer courses are being offered with an academic travel component. This presents a unique opportunity to study and visit the destination with a professor who knows the area like a native guide (not a tour guide – but an academic guide). Students are prepared with in-depth lectures for three weeks on the Lugano campus before spending two weeks on location in Malawi and Zambia. Coupled with the Lugano experience, this study travel offers a broader view of the world that can’t be found in a textbook or documentary. SCI 281 Physical Geography (Lugano/Malawi/Zambia) - 4 credits Prof. Anne Maran Flutti, First Session This course combines three weeks of classroom instruction in Lugano with a two-week field trip experience in Malawi and Zambia in South Central Africa. Weeks one to three (May 30-June 16): Class lectures at the Franklin College Lugano Campus Weeks four to five (June 19-June 30): Daily excursions and field observations in Malawi and Zambia The course covers the fundamental concepts of earth systems, to include the Big Bang theory and the technologies and methods related to the analysis of geographic data. Modern mapping technologies, patterns of climate change and the biogeography of tropical grasslands and savannahs are also included in the course. Field studies in Malawi and Zambia include local ecosystem analysis and the impact of human settlements from the paleogeographic period to the present.
