South Africa
Introduction [Top of Page] Background: After the British seized the Cape of Good Hope area in 1806, many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to found their own republics. The discovery of diamonds (1867) and gold (1886) spurred wealth and immigration and intensified the subjugation of the native inhabitants. The Boers resisted British encroachments, but were defeated in the Boer War (1899-1902). The resulting Union of South Africa operated under a policy of apartheid - the separate development of the races. The 1990s brought an end to apartheid politically and ushered in black majority rule. Geography: South Africa has three major geographical regions, namely plateau, mountains and the coastal belt. The high plateau has sharp escarpments which rise above the plains, or veld. Despite two major river systems, the Limpopo and the Orange, most of the plateau lacks surface water. Along the coastline are sandy beaches and rocky coves, and the vegetation is shrublike. The mountainous regions which run along the coastline from the Cape of Good Hope to the Limpopo Valley in the northeast of the country are split into the Drakensberg, Nuweveldberg and Stormberg ranges. South Africa is organised into nine regions or provinces.

Select a question from the list below, and click the green 'go' button next to the one that interests you. If a question has two parts can you give a combined answer at once to give a better structure to your answer? What applications should I study because I was looking for river basin management on this site but there was nothing on it. My problem is not understanding the material, but structuring the answers to the questions - especially in pressurised exam conditions. For example how would you structure an answer on ocean currents? I always seem to write too much and my thought process becomes confused. I get stuck when questions ask you to describe and explain, or account for etc. Also every year when you have to answer 2 questions from the application - my school does river basin mangement and development and health - has this always been the case or do the topics change? I am sitting Higher Geography and I find it hard to learn 8 core topics and remember all of then as well as the applications. Do you have any suggetions on how to study for them?

  • C. History of the Collection
    D. Collection Coverage
The geographical coverage of the collection is worldwide with in-depth collecting in the following areas: U.S., particularly Michigan; Africa; Latin America; and Canada. The Map Library houses the depository sheet map collection, with the main components being from the Defense Mapping Agency and the United States Geological Survey. In addition, the map library selectively houses maps on behalf of the regional depository at the Library of Michigan. Maps by commercial publishers and distributors are also acquired, including maps from the United Nations, the European Union, and the government of Canada, though not on a depository basis.
  • Most scholarly monographs and journal subscriptions are housed with the main collection, including exploration, some cartography, and most GIS. The Map Library has many of the gazetteers and carto-bibliographies in addition to the expected maps and atlases. Some manuals for GIS are housed in duplicate in the Map Library.

It includes within its remarkably regular outline an area, of c. 30,244,050 km mi ), including the islands. Separated from Europe by the Mediterranean Sea , it is joined to Asia at its northeast extremity by the Isthmus of Suez, 130 km (80 miles) wide. From the most northerly point, Ras ben Sakka in Morocco , a little west of Cape Blanc Cape Agulhas in South Africa Cape Verde Somalia 9,700,000 km (3,760,000 square miles), has a coast-line of 32,000 km (19,800 miles). The main structural lines of the continent show both the east-to-west direction characteristic, at least in the eastern hemisphere, of the more northern parts of the world, and the north-to-south direction seen in the southern peninsulas. Africa is thus composed of two segments at right angles, the northern running from east to west, the southern from north to south, the subordinate lines corresponding in the main to these two directions.
