Small groups of hunters and gatherers settled into the world's first farming villages. From these villages arose larger settlements, and eventually complex urban civilizations like our own. How and why did these changes take place? Why did ancient civilizations evolve in repeated cycles of expansion and collapse? What do the similarities and differences in the development of early civilizations tell us about the nature of culture change, of civilization and the state, and of human society itself?

The division of Ancient Civilizations and Biblical Studies offers instruction at the introductory to advanced levels in the languages, literatures, histories, cultures, and religions of the ancient Near East (Anatolia, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Israel, Jordan and Syria). The concentrator can select one of four programs in the division: Ancient Mesopotamia, Hebrew Bible/Ancient Israel, Ancient Egypt and New Testament/Early Christianity. The course, NES 100: Peoples of the Middle East, is a prerequisite to the ACABS concentration. The ACABS concentrator is required to complete four semesters of language. The languages for which four semesters of instruction are offered include Akkadian, Classical Hebrew, and Classical Greek (through Classical Studies). In place of the four semesters of one language, the concentrator can select one of the following language options: one year of Akkadian followed by one year of Sumerian; or one year of Classical Hebrew followed by one semester of Aramaic and one semester of Ugaritic; or one year of Classical Hebrew followed by a year of Classical Greek; or one year of Middle Egyptian and a year of one of the following languages:

    AFRICAN GEOGRAPHY

The Continent now known as Africa (MAP)
All but the last 10,000 or so years of human history belong entirely to the era known broadly as the Paleolithic (Old Stone Age).  The beginning of the Paleolithic is dated from when the hominid populations of Africa started to regularly make rudimentary tools from intentionally shaped stones for use in their daily lives.  The "stone ages"  (Old and New) ended when ancient humans began to use metals, such as copper or iron, as their principal tool making materials.  Metal decorations, tools and weapons began to appear about 8,000 years ago in some places, but were not in general use, even in the 'civilized world' of the time, until about 3,000 years ago.  Thus the stone ages, from the standpoint of time, constitute the bulk of human history.

Ancient history is the study of significant cultural and political events from the beginning of human history until the Early Middle Ages . Although the ending date is largely arbitrary, most Western scholars use the fall of the Western Roman Empire in AD as the traditional end of ancient history. Another term that is often used to refer to ancient history is antiquity , although this term is most often used to refer specifically to the civilizations of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome The span of recorded history is roughly 5,000-5,500 years, with Sumerian cuneiform being the oldest form of writing discovered so far. Genetic evidence, however, points to the first appearance of human beings about 150,000 years ago . There is also a growing body of evidence that Homo sapiens first left Africa about 60,000 years ago

    The study of ancient history
The fundamental difficulty of studying ancient history is the fact that only a fraction of it has been documented, and only a fraction of those recorded histories have survived into the present day. Literacy was not widespread in any culture until long after the end of ancient history, so there were few people capable of writing histories. Even those written histories which were produced were not widely distributed; the ancients, not having the luxury of a

The “Vanishing Evidence” series is a general summary of years of detailed observation and research. The full documentation supporting the conclusions expressed in this series of articles, including dozens of photographs, will be published in my forthcoming book, Modern Fraud: The Forged Ancient Egyptian Statues of Ra-Hotep and Nofret . I make no attempt here to “prove” such a complicated case as forgeries and the deliberate destruction of African artifacts in just a few short articles. Rather, this series is simply a preliminary report on my findings, which will be given extensive treatment in my book Modern Fraud. - MA SCOPE OF “THE VANISHING EVIDENCE” SERIES I originally wrote "The Vanishing Evidence of Classical African Civilizations" series in The Gaither Reporter in 1995-1996. The 3-part series documents the unintentional human-aided deterioration, as well as the deliberate and massive alteration, mutilation, and destruction of ancient Egyptian artifacts. The series covers three broad categories of this vanishing evidence: the Temple Evidence (part I), the
