Sovjetiske specialstyrker i Afghanistan i 1980-erne

War against terror BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan (CNN) U.S. Special Forces came under intense fire in western Afghanistan over the weekend, needing the firepower of a B-52 bomber to deter their attackers. A group of about 10 Special Forces members were on a regular patrol Sunday, gathering information near Shindand air base in southern Herat province, when they were peppered with large and small arms fire, military spokesman Col. Roger King said on Monday. Pinned down by the onslaught, King said the troops called in "close air support" from a B-52 bomber on regular patrol over Afghanistan, which dropped seven large bombs, ending the confrontation. The Special Forces were under fire for just over an hour, King said, and suffered no casualties. He said it was uncertain if the attackers knew who they were firing on and if the bombing had inflicted any casualties on them.

Hijacking suspect linked to Germany, Afghanistan
Jarrah HAMBURG, Germany (CNN) Family members of Ziad Samir Jarrah who the FBI believes helped hijack one of the planes used in Tuesday's terrorist attacks told CNN on Saturday that he spent some time recently in Afghanistan, the country accused of harboring alleged terrorist Osama bin Laden. In addition, German authorities said Jarrah and hijacking suspects Marwan al-Shehhi and Mohamed Atta all attended Harburg Technical University in Hamburg, Germany, at about the same time. The FBI says Jarrah is believed to have been at the controls of United Airlines Flight 93 on Tuesday when it crashed in Stony Creek Township, Pennsylvania. Al-Shehhi and Atta are accused by the FBI of hijacking the two planes that crashed into the World Trade Center. Jarrah studied electrical engineering at the Hamburg school and Atta studied urban planning, German authorities said. Jarrah, Atta, and al-Shehhi also lived in southern Florida where they are believed to have taken flight lessons, federal sources said. CNN.COM SPECIAL REPORT

Medical aid rushed to remote Afghanistan
Story Tools WASHINGTON (CNN) The United States may have helped stem an outbreak of whooping cough in a remote area of northern Afghanistan. U.S. helicopters transported a team of medical personnel and supplies to the Darwooz district, where the outbreak had already killed about 70 children, U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld told reporters Monday. The aid was delivered last Monday in response to a request from the World Health Organization. "One hundred to 200 more could have died each week if untreated," Rumsfeld said. It normally takes at least three days on horseback to reach the isolated region, he said. "Since the vaccine has a shelf life of just two days when not refrigerated, it might well not have survived the trip." In all, 2,000 people were vaccinated, the defense secretary said. A spokesman for the World Health Organization said officials at its Geneva headquarters were not sure whether whooping cough, also known as pertussis, was the cause of the deaths.

Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Afghanistan Civil Rights Beauty or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? MANILA, Philippines The first Afghan woman in three decades to take part in a beauty pageant has won Miss Earth's "beauty for a cause" award. Miss Afghanistan Vida Samadzai took home the inaugural prize at the event in Manila even though she failed to make it to the contest's semifinals. Miss Honduras Dania Prince was crowned Miss Earth. Samadzai, 23, won her award for "symbolizing the newfound confidence, courage and spirit of today's women" and for "representing the victory of women's rights and various social, personal and religious struggles," according to The Associated Press. But her achievement is unlikely to subdue much of the storm her parading in a bikini caused in her native Afghanistan. Samadzai who left Afghanistan in 1996 to study in the United States was condemned for treading the catwalk in a red bikini and may even face prosecution if she returns home.

WASHINGTON (CNN) U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on Sunday defended the Bush administration's policies in Iraq and Afghanistan, saying they have been successful. But a top Democratic senator said Powell's characterization "flies in the face" of daily attacks on U.S. troops and recent bombings in Iraq, including attacks on the Jordanian embassy, the U.N. headquarters, an Iraqi police station and a Muslim mosque. Powell, speaking on ABC's "This Week" hours before the president was to address the nation about his global effort against terrorism, said there was no need for a mid-course correction in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Afghanistan on verge of widespread famine
Refugees from drought and fighting at the overcowded Maslakh camp By CNN State Department Producer Elise Labott WASHINGTON (CNN) A devastating drought in Afghanistan has left 3.8 million people at risk of famine and the situation is "deteriorating rapidly", according to a U.S. delegation that recently returned from the central Asian country. The delegation said the drought is affecting every region of Afghanistan and that the country is lacking the necessary two million tons of food to feed its people a deficit that has doubled since just last year. "Everyone is more or less at the same level of shared destitution," said Peter Morris of the U.S. Agency for International Development's (USAID) Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance. The team's trip to assess the humanitarian situation in the country marked the first official U.S. visit to Afghanistan in three years.

1 Getting Oriented, Mazari-I-Sharif
Just in town, I decide to go for a walk. I leave the hotel, cross the street to the mosque, and gaze up at the blue tiled dome. The instant I stop walking four or five young men also stop walking, as if they'd just been pretending to be going somewhere. They stand right in front me. Then quickly there are ten, then thirty, fifty all boys and men, crowding close together, a hundred eyes looking at me in disbelief.
1 Men at the mosque in Mazar. 2 Money changers in Mazar. 3 More men at the mosque. "Where are you from?" a teenage boy asks. "America," I say, wondering if this is wise, because we'd just bombed their city and their country. But it's the word they want to hear, they want to say it. America.... America...America.... "California." I say, wanting to hear it echo. "Mississippi."
