U.S. prepares for post-Taliban Afghanistan
Although US military forces are massing in the region the Bush administration is working on a broad political strategy From CNN State Department Correspondent Andrea Koppel and Producer Elise Labott WASHINGTON (CNN) The Bush administration is preparing to intensify efforts to persuade the Afghan people that any U.S. military campaign in Afghanistan is not aimed at the average Afghan citizen, a senior administration source has told CNN. In addition to deploying forces for a possible military campaign, the administration is working on what officials call a broad strategy aimed not only at getting rid of Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda network, but preparing Afghanistan for a future without the Taliban. As part of the U.S. information offensive officials are looking to make use of regional radio and television broadcasts such as the Voice of America (VOA) or local radio stations in Pakistan.

Bill Hemmer: Truth difficult to find in Afghanistan
CNN Correspondent Bill Hemmer (CNN) The United States bombed a suspected terrorist training camp in Afghanistan on Friday as troops continued the search for Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar. CNN's Bill Hemmer is in Afghanistan and talked with CNN anchor Leon Harris from Kandahar. HEMMER: First, I want to start with this military attack. About 1:05 a.m., we could hear those jet planes streaking through the sky, the distance nighttime sky here. We knew something was up, but we weren't quite sure until we woke up several hours later. But this is what we understand. The Pentagon says it carried out attacks in the area of Khowst, that's in eastern Afghanistan. They say some al Qaeda fighters have resurfaced there. They say they were watching it for quite some time. Here is what happened: F-14s, F-18s, AC-130 gunships started pounding this area of Khowst. This area has been hit twice in the past, dating back to the 7th of October. It is also the same location where Tomahawk cruise missiles took aim back in 1998, that following reprisals for the bombings in East Africa in August of 1998. A ferocious attack, about 100 bombs dropped last night. Still no word on the battle damage on the ground there, possibly the Pentagon has more clarification on that a bit later today.

Searching the internet at the beginning of the year 2001 for "Kabul & museum" or for "Bamiyan" displays alarming news. This is why I'd like to put my old photographs of Afghanistan of the years 1969, 1970, and 1974 into the WWW to preserve a vivid memory of the treasures collected in the museum in Darulaman and of an Afghanistan as it used to be years ago.
Satellite view of the devastated museum in GoogleEarth.
The news international press agencies have been spreading since February 26, 2001 about the Taleban planning to destroy the Buddhas in Bamiyan as well as sculptures and paintings in the Kabul Museum and other locations in Afghanistan are nurturing the desire to present a collection of (former) treasures of Afghanistan in the world wide web. My professor and supervisor Klaus Fischer at the Department for Oriental Art History of the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms University in Bonn succeeded many years ago in providing me a permission of the Director General Archaeology Afghanistan, Prof. Dr. Sh. Moustamindy, to take plenty of photos in the museum in Darulaman before we went out for our fieldwork in Sistan in 1969. In memory of Klaus Fischer and in gratitude to his work in and about Afghanistan, I am presenting these pictures together with other photographs of the years 1970 and 1974 on this site. The descriptions of the photos will follow as soon as I will have "dug out" my old records.

Aid workers trial begins in Afghanistan
KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) The trial of eight overseas aid workers, accused of trying to convert Muslims to Christianity, began in Kabul on Tuesday, the chief justice of Afghanistan's Supreme Court said. The trial is in a preliminary stage, chief justice Noor Mohammed Saqib said, noting none of the detainees had been brought to court yet. Saqib emphasized that he could not put a time frame on the trial, but added the court would work "continuously." The eight aid workers charged with proselytizing two Americans, four Germans and two Australians are members of the Shelter Now International assistance group. Earlier Tuesday, officials of Afghanistan's Supreme Court met to decide the details of how to conduct the trial. AUDIO Journalist Kamal Hyder reports from Kabul. Commander Sees at Least Another Year in Afghanistan
By JAMES DAO
AGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan, June 18 — The commander of American troops in Afghanistan said today that he expected to need at least one more year to complete his mission here, namely to crush the remnants of Al Qaeda and the Taliban and to build the foundations of an Afghan national army. The commander, Lt. Gen. Dan K. McNeill, said that until those milestones were reached it was unlikely that the United States or its allies would significantly reduce their forces in Afghanistan, which currently number more than 12,000 soldiers, including 7,000 Americans. General McNeill also asserted in an interview here, though, that Afghanistan seemed to be gaining stability faster than had been widely expected, and he suggested that a partial withdrawal of American forces was possible starting next summer if that trend continued. "Certainly you have to believe things are moving in a direction where the Afghans are clearly taking charge of their destiny," he said. "That kind of narrows down the time the coalition will be here."

Ashcroft: Attacks rooted in Afghanistan
Attorney General John Ashcroft says a worldwide conspiracy rooted in Afghanistan is responsible for the September 11 attacks. WASHINGTON (CNN) Attorney General John Ashcroft said Tuesday a worldwide conspiracy that originated in Afghanistan was responsible for the September 11 attacks on the United States. Ashcroft declined, however, to specify evidence that has been shared with NATO allies. "We believe and believe there is evidence that makes it clear that the roots of this activity were in Afghanistan," Ashcroft said. "And we believe that the branches of the activity not only found their way to the United States, but were present in substantial ways in Europe, and that the activities of the conspirators carried them around the globe." Attacks rock Afghanistan
Sherzai, left, and Karzai walk through crowd before Thursday's shooting attack. KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (CNN) New fears of political instability are shaking Afghanistan after an assassination attempt on the president and two car bomb attacks on the capital city. President Hamid Karzai escaped Thursday's attack by a lone gunman wearing the uniform of the new Afghan army. Witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots in an exchange that left the gunman and one of the president's bodyguards dead and Kandahar Gov. Gul Agha Sherzai and a U.S. Special Forces soldier lightly wounded. A news photograph of the scene showed three bodies on the ground after the clash. The shooting in Kandahar happened hours after two explosions rocked the center of the Afghan capital, Kabul, killing at least 26 people and injuring 150 others. ( Full story Speaking to reporters about the failed assassination attempt, Afghan Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullah said that Karzai was leaving the governor's house when a uniformed, armed person appeared in front of their car and opened fire.

Oil from Central Asia
Jackpot Afghanistan
Western nations and their oil companies early focused their attention on the exploitation of oil fields of the Caspian Sea, in particular in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. [document 5]
The Caspian Basin's geological composition is still poorly researched. Optimistic estimates, based on the proven amount of oil, place the potential reserves at about ten times that much. Not even including extensive natural gas deposits, such a wealth of oil is surpassed only by the Gulf region. The prospect of such enormous energy resources drew many multinational oil companies to a region that had been off limits to foreign investors during seven decades under communism. But the fall of the Soviet Union and the creation of new states around the Caspian Sea reshuffled the cards. To whom would this bonanza fall? Who would control the oil and gas exports? And who would finally "civilize" Afghanistan and use it as a transit passage for Central Asian gas and oil products?
The Political Landscape
Known as Turkestan under the czars, the whole territory of Central Asia came under Communist control following the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. After defeating the Basmachi Muslim rebels opposed to communist rule the Soviets carved five separate republics from Turkestan: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. When the Soviet Union fell apart in 1991, they became independent countries that reached out to the West, joining NATO's Partnership for Peace and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Russia remains their main economic partner, and millions of ethnic Russians live in Central Asia.

Quake shakes Afghanistan capital
Alex Quade CNN KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) An earthquake shook the capital Sunday afternoon, causing damage and leaving seven people with serious injuries. There were no immediate reports of deaths. The quake, which struck at 4:30 p.m. (7 a.m. EST), was felt at Bagram Air Base, about 30 miles away, and as far away as India. A spokesman for the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado, said the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.2, with an epicenter 45 miles south, south-west of Feyzabad, Afghanistan. Bruce Presgrave said the strong earthquake caused minimal damage because it originated 121 miles below the earth's surface. The International Committee of the Red Cross said it had received no reports of casualties. The earthquake, which lasted about a minute, destroyed 14 houses 12 in the western part of the city, two others in the north of town, according to Kabul Radio. Twelve additional houses were seriously damaged in other parts of the city.
